Renaissance before Annie Haslam!

Back on again... in a better quality!... Enjoy! ;-)

Most of you are probably more familiar with the Renaissance group featuring Annie Haslam as main vocalist instead of the original line-up featuring Keith Relf and Jane Relf as front singers...

In between this transitional stage however, Renaissance had seen a succession of personnel and changes in style over a year or so!..

The line-up shown here, only knew a short existence from November till December 1970.

It consisted of:

Terry Crowe (lead vocals and backing vocals)

Binky Cullom (lead vocals and backing vocals)

Mike Dunford (guitar and backing vocals)

John Tout (keyboards)

Terry Slade (drums)

Neil Korner (bass guitar)

NB: This track was originally sung lead by Jim McCarty! ;-)

I have the DVD and it is worth the price of admission. I don't know if there is any other live version of Renaissance doing "Golden Thread" out there.

Thanks for adding this. Have the music on DVD ... but first time I've seen the line up. Some very haunting vocals there.

@MidnightMoses69 Thanks and yes! I did get a copy of Bacharach Baroque which turned out to be a Baroque version of songs by Burt Bacharach lol. Seems obvious of course - but no internet and very difficult to obtain accurate information in 1972. I must be one of the few people to have all Renaissance /Illusion and Bacharach Baroque in their vinyl collection. Not sure if this is something to be proud or ashamed...... :-) The Bacharach ownership I mean of course...

@londonbangkok Thanks, you just brought back a distant memory. Do you remember the old Phonolog? It was a huge directory that listed almost every musical recording ever made. It had an erroneous listing of a nonexistent Renaissance album named "Bacharach Baroque". I tried for at least two years to special order it. I have all Illusion (I think) and all pre-1980 Renaissance albums. Illusion's "Face Of Yesterday" was playing in my cassette deck when my car was totaled almost 30 years ago.

I found it interesting to see John with sheet music. Had he just joined the band and not familiar with the songs?

@IntuitionDigression This is an extract of the caption, underneath the video! ;-) The line-up shown here, only knew a short existence from November till December 1970. It consisted of: Terry Crowe (lead vocals and backing vocals) Binky Cullom (lead vocals and backing vocals) NB: This track was originally sung lead by Jim McCarty! ;-) This is indeed the transitional line-up just after Keith's Relf Renaissance and just before Annie Haslam!... I'm glad you like the original line-up!...

@JimMcCartyandCo Yes! I own all of them! Was at the Victoria Theatre Concert in c77 when Illusion supported Dory Previn. I seem to remember it was billed the other way round initially with DP supporting Illusion, somehow it was switched. DP was OK but I went to see Illusion of course. When I questioned "Is Jim McC here at all?" , I meant in this video of Golden Thread, not on this website in general!! :-). We all looked differnet in 1970 or whenever the video was taken:-)

@londonbangkok Yes, I'm here... every now and then! ;-) Cheers for your kind comment! Do you also own any of the Illusion material?

@phasedin Surely it is John Tout on piano in this clip. Is Jim McCarty here at all? In any case a brilliant few minutes of music. I own every Renaissance LP/CD (not counting some greatest hits stuff whuch would be pure duplication) and love the music of all the various line-ups. Often for different reasons!

@phasedin Neil Korner is the bass player and you'll find Terry Slade on the drums! Binky and Terry Slade met durring this very occasion, got married, had three children and are still going strong these days!... ;-)

@thatmuse76 Less than 12 months actually! I suspect Terry Crowe was chosen because he sounded a bit like Keith in the first place!... ;-) I don't know much of it myself, but John Hawken surely has the answer as he was the one involved with recruiting the new line-up!

@JimMcCartyandCo But it was this line-up with Jane, not Binky. This footage is the only recording of Binky in the band. Remarkably, Terry Crowe sounds a lot like Keith on this track. I still find it amazing that Renaissance appeared on Beat Club just 12 months earlier with a completely different line-up.
