Yeah, I agree. The "crazy" jazz comment was a bit out of line, but there's obviously light homage. But who cares anyway? Semantics. Genre labeling is the worst. Just enjoy the music...

The intro to Flattening of Emotions is basically atonal. If you want to get overly technical into it, its a Dmaj7sus4 voice leading into a Dmaj/min7, which is basically just an evolved version of an atonal riff you might find on Death's earlier albums. Just because there is a 7 relative to the root doesn't mean its "crazy jazz stuff". Musicality does not imply heavy jazz influence. Theres pretty much no jazz influence in Death.

Incredible song, incredible album. Cynic is one of the most underrated bands in history.

Tool is a pop band. Pop refers to popular music, which Tool is by definition. They've been winning Grammys for the last two decades and 10,000 Days opened at number one on the charts. That isn't a bad thing, that's just what they are. Hell, lots of critics will argue that all rock music is popular music.

Superbly put. To doubt the swing , and offbeat emphasis in Reinert's playing is just foolish. Listen to veil of maya, the number of syncopated passages!

They released tons of demo's before joining Death. Death was always the side project, hence Chuck raising a new lineup for ITP.

Epic song..why do people have to act like they know what theyre talking about....why we all get a long...we all like cynic obviously so just enjoy it. Why you guys break free from thiis knowledge contest..its so immature, and u guys are immature, unworthy of listening to professional metal. You guys are clueless

The first half of your statement is incorrect. the frontman for Cynic, Paul Masvidal, was in Death before Cynic had released any albums.

People fight over anything. Is it more important to be right than happy? Tai Shar Malkier. Tai Shar Manetheren.

no.. DEATH was influenced by Cynic. They're both awesome anyway

What? The intro to Lack of Comprehension swings, there is an emphasis on offbeats, both very jazzy musical influences. It's not as overt as in Cynic, but it's still there.
