Ms. Ballard sang lead on a number of songs, and some were released as singles at a time when the company was desperately trying to get a hit for the group. Those songs did not succeed. The records with Ms. Ross as lead hit quickly and established the group's sound. Florence and Mary are treasured as Supremes by all of us fans. But, the reality is that Ms. Ross had the unique, beautiful voice, the style and the work ethic. She is why we are still talking about the Supremes.

@gemmni1 Not really... If it wasn't for Florence Ballard who GOT the group together, and CHOSE the name SUPREMES then Ms. Ross would still be in Detroit. Favortism was the factor at Motown, Berry thought Florence voice was too BLACK, and Diana had that WHITE commerical sound. Everybody giving Diana the glory, but Florence and Mary were the heart and soul of the Supremes.

she was the prettiest and she had and STILL! has the voice beecause she is more down to earth and not forgetting where she came from! no direspect to DR but in a sense Dianna prostituted her way to the industry because in the 1960's berry's eyes were on her instead of the group itself. and i want to thank Florence for supplying the group with everything from essence to beauty to just str8 up reality! and i hate when they put her out like she was nothing id say mary and flo had more sense

Flo's voice is almost kinda like Nona Hendryx's (Nona Henydryx is from LaBelle and was a member of Patti LaBelle and the Blue Bells as well) but both of their voices were rich and had a lot of soul in them.
