Often times when I stumble upon an XTC song I have never heard, I find that it becomes my favorite...what incredible talent...I can't believe they come from the UK...kidding of course.

This is the same band that did "This is Pop" = mind blown.

Such a shame that XTC disbanded. Their last two albums were excellent, and its sad to think what brilliant works they could have produced in the years since then.

To be fair, if XTC ever charted, it'd just mean more money for evil Virgin Records who screwed the band over financially from the very beginning. But they deserve far more recognition as artists, certainly.

Compare this tune to Brian Wilson's 'Put Your Head on My Shoulder' or "Let's Go Away for Awhile' from Pet Sounds.

Because the paradox is that XTC are the greatest group Britain has had since the heyday of the 60s and rank with those sixties titans, are adored by so many, many fans who hear musical and lyrical genius and yet somehow they never really cracked the best selling charts as they deserved. Apple Venus Vol One was the greatest pop/rock/orchestral album since the Beach Boys classic Sunflower, another work of genius that should have hit number one.

I didn't. I have always adored the words and the sweetness of the vocal on that very backdrop closing refrain. Very perceptive of you xnonsuchx

Apple Venus Volume 1 (1999) could be Pet Sounds' worthy musical heir.

@Culpano A Lot of big bands are/were influenced by XTC. There is/was a kind of unspoken acknowledgment, but they are something really rare, we which we will probably never see the like of again. They lasted so long and it is a shame, but I guess they too, like many others, had a time limit. As fans we used to wait years for something to come out, and when it did, it was usually very special. AV was the last real hurrah as a great band. j

@Culpano Yes they did - very nice of them! You perhaps need to read the book on XTC (if you have not already). There have been a lot of comings and goings over the years re: band members, but AP & CM are/were the real heart and soul of the band. Dave Gregory left years ago and they carried on, but I guess Colin/Andy decided enough was enough. They had all those problems with the record label too and not Touring (Andy's stage fright). The strings and horns on AV really make the it all work. j
