Lyrics:

A bell in a churchyard,

It yells for me to begin.

And my hands they tremble and shake.

While a chill burrows under my skin.

It rains in the valley,

It rains from the skies.

And it's raining deep inside my soul,

And it pours up and out of my eyes.

Not long ago, you were here in my arms

And I swore I would protect you from harm

Now here we are.

On this hill, 'neath the tree

In the Churchyard at dawn.

How could we've fallen so far?

The earth is a blood-red clay

That cakes to my heels.

And the spade grows heavy as lead,

And my heart it is heavier still.

In a bow there's a raven

And its eyes fix me with a stare.

Then he turns and screams at the sky.

And it burns like the truth in my ears.

Not long ago, you were here in my arms

And I swore I would protect you from harm

Now here we are.

On this hill, 'neath a tree

In the Churchyard at dusk.

How could we've fallen so far?

No one should find out how it feels

Standing here, hoping and praying

You'll awake from this awful ordeal.

No one should find out what it's like

Standing here, digging a hole in which to bury

Your child and your wife.

When they are finished

They look like wounds on a hill

Two graves, that lay side by side

For my life and my lover to fill.

No one should find out how it feels

Standing here, hoping and praying

You'll awake from this awful ordeal

No one should find out what it's like,

Standing here, not having the means

To buy the medicine to save their lives.

I legit cried during this, it reminds me of someone I knew. Also, it was sad when he said he couldn't buy medicine.... that would be awful, truly great song, one of my favorites.

I wasn't sure about it at first, but I like his country music, too.

Here is my interpretation; The song is about a farmer in south during the dust bowl; Due to the dust bowl and great depression, His farm is beginning to fail since there is nothing that can't be produced to sell (Crops and Livestock dying) and if anything did sell he would have gotten so little money from it. His wife and child fall ill to some disease (Take your pick of diseases that would be common of that time.) He had to sit there watching his wife and child suffer and perish before his eyes since he did not have the money to buy the medicine, Thus the final stanza of the song;"No one should find out how it feelsStanding here, hoping and prayingYou'll awake from this awful ordealNo one should find out what it's like,Standing here, not having the meansTo buy the medicine to save their lives."

A ton of Voltaire's work is goofy, raunchy, and irreverent. Nothing wrong with that. But this song is dark and sad and beautiful and it really stands alone next to everything else he's produced.

Simply because they didn't enjoy the song? I honestly don't think Voltaire would agree with this. I mean, from what I've seen some of the lyrics in his songs speak of, I'd say we shouldn't decide you should either enjoy something or die. We can all believe our own way. However, if they had commented some dumb shit like, "Dur, Justin Bieber is better dan dis emo gay shit! #YOLOSWAG", I would agree with you.

xD you're right I messed up the lyrics but I had to! It was for the sake of making it work!D:< and don't bash my nickname Q. Q I made the account in 6th grade and am too lazy to change the name for the nostalgia!

With a nickname like that, even if your comment has tattered one of his songs to pieces to the point where the usage of it as validation of slaughter for anything is profoundly vauge and suspect and makes me shake my head, sigh and laugh while rolling my eyes in befudlment that I can somehow retort even vaugely to your comment! I can only justify me giving said reply due to your brilliance in choices of profile photo and name! NEXT TIME YOU RUIN A BRILLIANT SONG, I SHALL NOT BE SO KIND, CHILD!

I'm really sick of all these advertisements when I'm trying to watch your stuff. Always ruins great music when there's an interuption for ads.

I feel like I should be in a rocking chair on a porch just slowly rocking and playing the banjo and singing this. Time to get banjo lessons, I guess.
