Lyrics:

If you gave me a nickel

to mend my ways,

well, then I'd have a nickel

and I reckon I'd probably owe you change.

I don't have a care, I don't have a plan.

I got nothing to spare and it's

just the way I am.

If you gave me your two cents

on how to live my life,

well, then I'd have two cents

and a great big pile of bad advice.

I don't doubt your mind or ability

I just highly doubt that you know what's right for me.

You say I'm stubborn as a mule, boy

'cause you got words, I just won't hear.

I may seem stubborn as a mule, boy,

but if wealth is measured by the ease,

you do just what you please,

then I'm the richest man in here.

You say to save my pennies

for a rainy day.

But I can't buy beer with pennies

I've gone and stashed away.

That rainy day, might be when I'm dead

so I'd rather spend, them now on beer instead.

If you bet me a dollar, that I am wrong,

I'd take your dollar and I'd put it in the jukebox

for this song.

Then I'd sit on back and pretend to hear,

your nagging words, while I finish up my beer.

You say I'm stubborn as a mule, boy

'cause you got words, I just won't hear.

I may seem stubborn as a mule, boy,

but if wealth is measured by the ease,

you do just what you please,

then I'm the richest man in here.

You've got the things you need

and that's alright for you.

You've got your cubicle and your three-piece-suit.

You've got security and hypertension, too

and you've got that tie that fits you like a noose!

Bet your bottom dollar that the buck stops here

'cause if you meet me in another forty years,

I'll still be broke and I may be old

but the life I'd lived,

would have been worth more than gold.

You say I'm stubborn as a mule, boy

'cause you got words, I just won't hear.

I may seem stubborn as a mule, boy,

but if wealth is measured by the ease,

you do just what you please,

then I'm the richest man in here.

Mr. Voltaire, you are truly an inspiration to me. I discovered your music years ago back in high school, and it helped me get through the day. It got me into song-writing, rather than just playing guitar, and I perform locally in bumfuck nowhere Montana. Thanks so much for making amazing music.

Somehow, I cant picture Voltaire saying "golly n gay", just a thought.

The story I know is that while the witch was burning they threw the homosexuals onto the faggots stacked around her, but I suppose the end result is the same.

I can respect that. I apologize if that last one seemed impertinent. Boredom does horrible things to my logic on occasion. Not that I actually expected that idea to work out anyway. lol

I drink for my own enjoyment and for no other reason. This isn't a game, son... it's a lifestyle.

The kinds of arguments that break out on YouTube (or any other media/social website for that matter) are simply aggravating. I can't find any logic in attacking a musician's song that HE posted FREELY for the world to view, and yet the dispute that is apparently going on here has nothing to do with the song . . . ? This is border-line hilarious and ironic, seeing as the location of this bitch-fest is "Stubborn as a Mule." lol Then again, Voltaire handles these pests so wonderfully. xP GREAT SONG

In my opinion, it's also important to note that most of the "wtiches" that were burnt were nothing more than free thinking people whose only crime was refusing to adhere to the same barbaric mindset as the ruling class (largely composed of people with ties to the church). Hatred and bigotry are some of the oldest traditions in this world, and in order to truly break these traditions, I feel that one needs to trace them to their roots. This is essentially a long winded way of saying, "I agree."

Needless to say, you'd have to be a sick, heartless fuck to think that referring to homosexuals as "kindling wood" is okay... but then, it seems there are still some of these hateful people in the world. Sadly, somehow these same folks have convinced themselves that their hateful, cruel behavior is somehow what their "loving" and "accepting" God would want from them. It's just fucking sickening.

Yes, history! In the middle ages "faggot" meant a thin piece of wood... the same kind of wood as would be used as kindling wood. If you wanted to start a fire, first you would ignite some faggots. Well, as it happens, before they'd burn a witch, they would warm up the audience by burning some lesser deviants, often times homosexuals. Because the homosexuals were burned before the main event, they were joking referred to as kindling wood or "faggots". That word is still used by bigots today.
