Lyrics:

If you're headin' down the highway

Down about route ten,

Get off at the last exit

And take it around the bend

You'll find a small town

But don't go hangin' 'round.

'Cause hate lives in a small town

'Least that's what I have found.

The moms are in the kitchens

And they're baking pies.

They smell so good, they're made to

Cover up the smell of lies

There in a small town.

But pies don't cure all ills.

And hate lives in a small town,

That's why those moms take pills.

Well, I went to the big city

And everyone was wearing black.

If they saw that in my home town,

They wouldn't stand for that.

I saw kids all covered in tattoos,

With mohawks and purple hair.

But what really struck me,

Was no one seemed to care!

Well, the Knights they beat the Badgers

When they played down in the square

But they saved the biggest beating

For a kid with longish hair.

There in a small town.

That kid was me one year.

'Cause hate lives in a small town

Moreso if you seem queer.

The pastors in the pulpit,

Preaching righteous lies.

And the congregation, they don't know

He slept with all their wives.

There in a small town,

And it's so plain to see

That hate lives in a small town,

As does adultery.

I went to the big city,

With my clothes in a pack.

When I got off at the station,

There was no turning back.

I met freaks and creeps and weirdos,

Loose women and some geeks.

And they were the nicest gosh darn people,

I'd ever hope to meet.

When you roll into a small town,

They're nice as they can be.

But at night they put on sheets,

And hang your sad ass from a tree.

There in a small town,

Don't dare be different.

'Cause hate lives in a small town

Unless you're just like them.

If you're living in a small town,

And you feel you're in a vice.

Just buy yourself a ticket, kid,

Just take my advice.

And leave the small town,

Be quick as you can be.

Get out of that small town,

And you'll be free like me.

I feel lucky that I live in Colorado. Where for wearing a cape to school I at most get weird looks.

First off, Voltaire you are literally the best musician ever :) you had fun, relatable lyrics that never get old. The sounds and tunes of your music is absolutely perfect. I love how you put the albums on here so people who can't really afford it get to listen to your music. That shows what a nice, non-greedy guy you are. I love listening to your music, and it really helps me when I feel sad. I don't wanna gush, so I'll just end with: Voltaire you are my favorite musician ever!! :)

Anyone who romanticizes small-town life has never had to live in one.

This is 100% true if you also include the suburbs in this~

I dont think Voltaire ever lived in Oklahoma or Tennessee. In the country, thats where all the freaks and geeks are. Hellbillies everywhere...and i love it!

If you think this song is about Ferguson, Missouri SHAME ON YOU!It's about Chesterfield, Missouri where the construction firms put all of West St. Louis County's Section 8 housing in North St. Louis County. See the documentary Spanish Lake.

I love this song. Growing up in quite a shitty small town in Wales (UK), I can totally relate to this. The lyrics are extremely true XD Voltaire, you are just a genius.

Story of my life! ): I'm a 14 year old girl and I live in Belfast (Northern Ireland) which isn't exactly a small town, but, in my experience, does project a lot of hate to people who Voltaire describes. I guess you could call me goth/steampunk whatever, but from my experience the hate doesn't come from religious adults, a lot of the time it comes from a group of teenage girls! (Sometimes girls who even go to my school!) This is why Voltaire is my favorite musician- he knows exactly what us fans are going through and speaks out to us in a fun and humorous way!! :D
