Another beautiful song by England's finest. I am not sure there is another band with quite such a body of work as the Kinks . People say the Beatles but you can't compare this with garbage like Yellow submarine.

Been a kinks fan for a few years now but never heard this album. Wow it's fantastic.

For such a famous band, the Kinks have recorded a mind boggling number of songs that no one seems to know (at least here in the USA). Ray Davies is an extraordinary songwriter......

One of the best endings ever. This song is so sad but at the same time so happy...I love it!

David Evans (for some reason Youtube won't let me reply to you directly) - Wonderful post. Great description of expecting to complete a mundane assignment and being blown away by a rock and roll album that transcends literary analysis. I've been a Kinks fan since the 1960s and they still astonish me. There are other deeply moving lyricists - Pete Townshend, John Lennon, Neil Innes, Phil Ochs, Patti Smith, etc. - but no one's lyrics move me as much as Ray's. Like you, I'd guess, I've read a lot of literature (and got an M.A. in it, long ago) but nothing anyone's ever written in mere print touches me the way the songs on "Arthur" and, perhaps just a bit less consistently but often just as powerfully, "Face to Face," "Something Else," "Village Green Preservation Society" and "Lola" do, forty-some years later. I hope you've listened to them all by now. Thanks to everyone who's posting with so many interesting, responsive comments on the Kinks and especially to you, David, for your appreciation of Ray's writing - you're a pretty good writer yourself!

Sounds a lot like "Listen to the Mockingbird", an old american folk song.

yes and no, not a great rhythm section like the Stones, but better songs.

Like most works of genius, this album, the Kinks, and Ray Davies will never get the credit they deserve. But thank God they exist!

I had this in cassette in 1969 and loved cruising around in my car listening to it. And I had the vinyl LP for my room. In the fall of 1971 I saw them in concert at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. They did much of their earlier material, current songs at the time like Lola and then they did most of this album. It was one hell of a great concert. It is one of my favorite albums. I love the way Dave Davies is heard screaming in jubilation while pulling off one the greatest rock riffs of all time.

Sounds just like "listen to the mockingbird" an old folk standard.

oh my god... I'm taking a history of rock class, and have to write a short paper on a concept album. I don't know much about rock so I googled "concept albums," and here i am on the final song with 30 pages of hand written notes. I've been moved to tears, I've laughed, I've nodded in agreement; this is probably more moving than any literary analysis I've done, because beyond the themes of war and social class, it's really about a human life. How can I ever condense this into a 1 page paper?!
