The first thing that I heard you say

When you were standing

There set in your way

Was that you were not blind

You were sure to make a fool of me

'Cause there was nothing

There that you could see

That could go beyond your mind

Now who's standing at the door

Remembering the days before

And asking please be kind

It isn't how it was set up to be

But I set you free this time

I have never been so far out in front

That I could ever ask for what I want

And have it any time

Knowing this you found the thought for me

That told you just what I should be

And there I stood behind

With all the ones that were before

And memories that only seem

To tear me from my mind

In front of what it is you see me to be

I've set you free this time

I could never find a chance to choose

Between a way to win or a thing to lose

Because there was your stand

On top of all love the love you took

That was always something

You could look at lying in your hand

Now who's wondering what has changed

And why it cannot be arranged

To have each thing work fine

It isn't how it was set up to be

But I've set you free this time

A bad choice for an A Side in the mid 60's. Too slow and too many words for people to sing along to. Too sophisticated really.

A pop masterpiece of the 1960s, beautifully written, and years ahead of its time. Eventually, Gene Clark will be placed on the same pedestal as Dylan and Lennon/McCartney.

underrated Byrd, Clark's lyrical prose (and, not trying to compare to Crosby, but...) was so deep and thought provoking, I'd stack it against David's. saying...

Their breakout hit was Mr. Tambourine Man: Not a very good cover but it woke a lot of people up to Dylan, and the Byrds were tagged as "the band that does Dylan songs"; however, their 2nd album Turn! Turn! Turn! contained only 2 Dylan compositions. I had this album and this song immediately stood out for me. They out-Dylan'ed Dylan with this one; a great number in its own right, which has stood the test of time.

Why wasn't this a big hit? It was released as the a-side of the followup single to "Turn! Turn! Turn!", but the DJs soon strated playing more of the b-side "It Won't Be Wrong", which was also very cool, but not as cool as this Dylan-inspired Gene Clark masterpiece with the wonderful harmonies on the title phrase.

I feel the same way. Not well known, but maybe their best song.

Gen Clark was one of the best writers ever.

In the 3rd line, "..... said in your way" could possibly be ".....set in your way" Makes more sense and much more poignant. Are the lyrics on any of the "official" compilation albums since Turn! Turn! Turn! ? Because these on-line lyric sources get words wrong often...

I think my all time favorite era of music has to be from about 1965-67. I like alot of other years too but something about the raw sound and the message that hooks me. I love the same era of muscle cars the best too!
