SUSIE (DRAMAS)

Elton John

Honky Chateau (1972)

I got frostbitten in the winter

Ice skating on the river

With my pretty little black-eyed girl

She'd make your darn toes curl just to see her

I got a fringe front on my buggy

I got a frisky little colt in a hurry

And a pretty little black-eyed Suzie by my side

Well she sure knows how to use me

Pretty little black-eyed Suzie

Playing hooky with my heart all the time

Living with her funky family

In a derelict old alley

Down by the river where we share a little loving in the moonshine

I'm an old hayseed harp player

I'm the hit of the county fair

With my pretty little black-eyed girl

Living proof as she swirls

She's a dancer

Strolling down memory lane here. First LP I ever bought, and I just realized some of the tracks are where I learned about syncopation. :-) too cool.

I'd say the musical decline really started with "Rock of the Westies." That was the follow up to "Captain Fantastic." That was the album where he started working with other musicians. He was still working with his great band on "Captain Fantastic." (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson, etc.) Also Bernie Taupin's lyrics started to decline in quality at that point. But Elton was so big at that time that the album was a huge hit anyway.

Couldn't agree more. It's worth buying the album just to have his countrified, funky version of Honky Tonk Woman.

You gotta listen to 11-17-70. One of the top live albums of all time.

on he vinyl LP this song runs right into Rocket Man. On the CD , there is a slight gap between the two songs, people who have the original UNI LP will know what I;m talking about

I'd forgotten about Honkey Chateau,, or the rest of the 'early" elton works,, that guy was cool at the time, and not some gay pride parade on stage,, Madman Across The Water,,Dont' Shoot me, I"m only the Piano Player,, Yellow Brick Road,, etc,, wonderful stuff,, went to hell starting with "Captain Fantastic"

This is an extremely underrated album. One of the best albums of the era for sure, though its rarely recognized as such.
