I'd say the musical decline really started with "Rock of the Westies." That was the follow up to "Captain Fantastic." That was the album where he started working with other musicians. He was still working with his great band on "Captain Fantastic." (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson, etc.) Also Bernie Taupin's lyrics started to decline in quality at that point. But Elton was so big at that time that the album was a huge hit anyway.11 years ago
