I think he's not. His music just doesn't have that thing the masses can relate to. Steve himself acknowledges this as he has stated this in interwievs. Underrated means some artist has something that appeals to everybody but somehow it's not just famous. Steve isn't like that. Steve has his fanbase and everybody who wants to listen Steve Vai listens to him.

@EstevanMusic Agreed! In the early 90s, when Devin Townsend was singing for Steve, they played In My Dreams With You on the radio for awhile. It was sweet. =) Now, Devin is a master in his own right.. and NEITHER of them are ever on the radio. But, I s'pose the same is true of most Metal bands as well. It's just up to us true appreciators and efficianados to seek the good music out where it plays. No Marty Friedman on the radio either, except for old Megadeth stuff.. unless you live in Japan. =)

Steve Vai is a guitar god in the minds and hearts of millions. And rightfully so. "Underrated" is a term that describes... what? Reviews by critics and magazines? Popularity? Some 'ranking' system that's created (and recognized!) by... who??? Dozens of TRULY 'underrated' guitarists. Steve Vai is not one.
