Unfortunately, everything has been "ego" driven over the past several decades... competition...how fast can I be... how many tricks can I do... oh, I wanna play like that person... oh, I can play like that person... notice how many "I"s are in the point. The days of multiple musicians playing WITH each other using dynamics, heart, soul, groove, funk, rhythm, beats, melodies, harmonies and passion FOR the sake of the MUSIC and the entertainment and enjoyment of the audience has vanished into oblivion.

Jimi hendrix was nothing more than an egocentric. He had no special defining skills. He just happened to play in a way that no one else had done or heard of before, at that time. Hence he's now considered one of the greats. Throughout history there have been musicians that paved the way with true skill yet no one's heard of them because they dedicated themselves to the art, not the hype. Steve Morse, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola, Joe Satriani Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, Kenny Burrell...I could go on and on, but my point is Hendrix was nothing more than a doped up flash in the pants in comparison.

It's amazing how all of these-pro, famous, experienced guitar players all put together have zero feeling compared with Jim Hendrix. Don't get me wrong, I like and admire all of these guitarists, especially Skunk Baxter. But I think it's important to remember what a stupendous musician Jimi was. Jimi was unbelievably fast, but that was NOT his most powerful weapon. Jimi's atomic weapon was PASSION. All of these guitarists (except Skunk Baxter, who pulls off some truly-virtuoso licks) are doing lots of guitar tricks which are fast but are actually pretty easy. Jimi had complete command over his guitar and amplifier.I agree with those who have commented about the poor guitar tone all of these players have, especially compared with Jimi. For you guitar players, that's because these players are using WAY TOO MUCH overdrive from preamp tubes (or worse, from pedals) and not enough from power tubes, and because they're using strings that are so thin (so they can play fast with little effort), instead of slapping some fatter strings on. When you use very skinny strings and too much overdrive, the notes lose attack - the kinda float very silky-smooth out of the guitar. That supersilkysmooth tone is boring. And if you play five hundred notes a second nonstop that's unbearably boring. I don't know what gauge of strings Jimi used, but I do know he relied very heavily on tube amp overdrivethere's no doubt that when he hit a note or a chord it had beautiful attack. The singer, who is the bass player in David Letterman's/Paul Shaffer's band (officially named the "CBS Orchestra"), is the person here singing and playing with real passion, heaviosity, soul, whatever you want to call it.
