This is my cover of "Israel" (1980) by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I could be wrong, but this song seems to me to be about the wall between Arabs and Israelis. In the song, there are orphans and a toothless man trying to sing on the outside, while those on the inside are hating and locking them out of their Christmas (a very exclusive holiday--at no time do I feel more alienated from America than the 2-3 month span that is now Christmas). While green and red are symbols of Christmas, they are also present on many Arab flags and their countries used to have princes and kings (thanks mainly to European imperialism, followed by US support for these regimes), but now anything like that is a fragment of the past. While I do not excuse violent extremism by Arabs, I also don't support their oppression by Europe and Israel. It seems to me to be just a big ongoing war between two fascist organizations. Tell me what you think if you have a different interpretation, please.
I am playing Fender Violet Deliriums ESM Signature Model Blacktop HH Jaguar. (ESM stands for Explosive Space Modulator) through my Boss ME-6 multi-effects unit (with a warbly chorus, a little delay, and a little bit of distortion on, and no changes during the song) and an old Silverface Twin Reverb amplifier from the 1970s. I played the MP3 with Itunes on my Mac and recorded and using a Samson C01U USB connection mic into my Mac with the PhotoBooth program. Yes I know it is mirror image and not perfect. A couple other people do covers of this song that I like: Guedzilla & IFoughtTheLaw369.
Little orphans in the snow
With nowhere to call a home
Start their singing, singing.
Waiting through the summertime
To thaw your hearts in wintertime
That's why they're singing, singing.
Waiting for a sign to turn blood into wine
The sweet taste in your mouth, turned bitter in it's glass
Israel, in Israel. Israel, in Israel.
Shattered fragments of the past
Meet in veins on the stained glass
Like the lifeline in your palm
Red and green reflects the scene
Of a long forgotten dream
There were princes and there were kings
Now hidden in disguise, cheap wrappings of lies
Keep your heart alive with a song from inside
Even though we're all alone
We are never on our own when we're singing
There's a man who's looking in
And he smiles a toothless grin
Because he's singing, singing.
See some people shine with glee
But their song is jealousy
Their hate is clanging, maddening
In Israel...will they sing Happy Noel
Israel, in Israel. Israel, in Israel.
In Israel will they sing Happy Noel
