This is my cover of Rage Against The Machine's famous song "Killing In The Name" (1992). When asked how effective he thought RATM was at getting its political message out there, Tom Morello once said that as long as he sent a few kids home saying "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" that it could be considered a victory.

I played the on my Fender Violet Deliriums ESM Signature Model Blacktop HH Jaguar (ESM = Explosive Space Modulator) which has Seymour Duncan SH-1 pickups, a killswitch, and some neato stickers on the pickguard. It is tuned in drop-D for this song. I ran it through my 1970s Silverface Twin Reverb with various effects. I used a Boss ME-6 for the basic distortion, a Line 6 MM4 stompbox modeler (the pretty blue one) for the flanger, and a Digitech XP-100 set on patch #14 (bend two octaves up) for the crazy guitar thing in the middle. To record it, I played the MP3 with my Mac on Itunes, and recorded it using the Mac's PhotoBooth program which puts it in mirror image (sorry). I used a Samson CO1U microphone with USB connection into my Mac.

Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses...

Killing in the name of...

And now you do what they told ya...

Those who died are justified for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites

You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites...

Some of those that wear forces are the same that burn crosses...

Killing in the name of...

And now you do what they told ya...

And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control...

Those who died are justified for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites.

You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites...

Come on!

Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me...

Wise choice. I like the fact that there is band with such attitude in US. And the fact that there are people who listen and read it i like too. Kind regards.

It's an ME-6 correct, and I use it most of the time on my "normal" pedalboard, but sometimes I make a special pedalboard for certain songs. I have a playlist called "Violet's Pedalboard" where I explain what's on my pedalboard and how I use it to make different sounds if you are interested.

The whammy will be a good start and give you some things to work with, then you can see what else might be needed. He really does not use the phaser/flanger much: “Killing in the Name” (0:00-0:08), “Settle for Nothing” (0:59-1:19, 2:08-2:47. 3:45-4:24), “Wake Up” (0:36-1:00, 1:47-2:07, 5:06-5:29), “Township Rebellion” (3:07-4:51), “Freedom” (5:09-5:41), “Wind Below” (0:08-0:43, 1:18-1:49, 2:16-2:46). You can really do without it, he says he uses it to "thrill the children" once in a while.

Like I said, if you are wanting to play like Morello, you can hold off on the Phase 90 of look around for something that will do the same thing. In this performance, I used a flanger. On the first three RATM recordings, Morello used an Ibanez DFL flanger, not a Phase 90, and in any case, he doesn't use flanger/phaser very often. It is not essential to his style the way whammy, wah, and delay are.

If you want to learn how to do Morello's tricks, look at /watch?v=aJXzY9vhqZg and there is a book by Troy Stetina ("The Best of Rage Against the Machine") which is helpful. My advice is decide what songs you want to learn and then decide what gear is needed to play them. In general, the whammy pedal, wah pedal, and toggle/killswitch are the most essential things. After that the delay, but you can do without flange/phaser, EQ, and tremolo.
