Not a panhandler. He was handicapped...pulled himself along the sidewalk. Sold pencils and ribbons in the area around Leonards department store. Raised a family.

I was told the other day that this song was written about a panhandler who used to be in downtown Fort Worth. I was raised in Fort Worth but I'd never heard this story before.

Great song, unfortunately the singers of today can't do it the way Jim could.

Every time I hear this song(every holiday season, of course), it makes me think of Jason Robards, in his role as the new widower in "The Xmas Wife," (where he "hires" Julie Harris to be his "Xmas companion"), referring to the man in this song,"there he sits, by himself, on the sidewalk, hoping you won't pass him by," like the man in question also could be a new widower, reluctant and afraid to spend the holidays by himself(who wouldn't be?) Great song, though; enjoy hearing it every holiday season, and now, Christmas is on the way AGAIN(45 more days, as I post this comment).

Written by Willie Nelson, sung by Roy Orbison. Doesn't get any better than this.

Such a beautiful song by one person who many of his peers admired and so much tragedy in his life. Thank you very much for letting us enjoy.
