This recording was done on 17 January 1928 (by Victor) and never released on 78 rpm. It was an alternative take to the one which WAS released; both were recorded on the same day.

The other take is very famous and you can find it on numerous youtube posts, just search 'ponselle pace 1928' (or check the video responded to).

This take to my ears though, is even better than the 'official' release. Listen to her pianissimo Bb on the 'invan la paaaaace'. It is one of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard.

i tried to leave this page, but I came back with this on my mind, 'come il di primo, da tanti'anni dura, profondo e il mio soffrir...." my goodness, and that voice.

Incomparable artistry from the one of a kind magnificent voice, to the impeccable technique, to the unmatched fluidity and apparent ease of execution. It's mind boggling. Being Italian doesn't hurt either because her Italian is also gorgeous.

When I was a young opera goer in the 1970's I met an older gerntleman who was in his early 70's who had heard Ponselle at the Met. He always contended that Rosa Ponselle had THE most beautiful voice and the finest technique of any singer he ever heard. Sutherland, Caballe, Tebaldi, etc, none of them could hold a candle to Rosa Ponselle according to my older friend. Having only these recordings to go by it's hard to hear what what was so fascinating about her sound.. However my friend and I would go to the opera and we frequently critiqued the singers we heard, and regarding the great contemporary singers (Sutherland, Nilsson, Pavarotti, etc, we always agreed but he would always add a caveat "None of them ever came close to making musical magic like Rosa Ponselle". What I wouldn't give to hear Rosa sing live and in person when she was at her peak at the Met.

In the 1960s Rosa Ponselle had a home north of Baltimore called "Villa Pace".

3:25 I had never heard this song before I heard this version...I was trying to concentrate on something else, but was blown away by this amazing Bb.....a sweet, lingering 7 seconds. I listened to another 20 versions of this song on youtube and none of them even come close. Wow.

I think the messa di voce here at the beginning here is the BEST I have ever heard ....in any recording I've ever heard. In my humble opinion, this aria and her recording of Suicidio are the clarion examples of Ponselle being one of the greatest - if not THE greatest - dramatic (non-d'agilita') soprano of the 20th Century ....if not all time. Phenomenal!
