For Pam

From the album Cazy M-Train, the lyrics are included..This song was covered by REM on the album Dead Letter Office.

Lyrics:

You're funny and you don't know why

YOu're funny and you can't even cry

You're funny and you don't know why

You're funny and you don't even try

You're head keeps SHAKIN

because you're arms are SHAKING

and your feet are SHAKING

because the EARTH is SHAKING

Listen...

nothing can hurt you unless you want it to

there are no answers

only reasons to be STRONG

you take a walk

you take a walk and you try to understand

nothing can hurt you unless you want it to

oh...

your'e in love and you don't know WHY

you're in love and you can even cry

you're in love and you don't know why

you're in love and you don't even try

(cause) youre HEAD keeps SHAKING

because you're arms are shaking

and you're feet are shaking

(because) the EARTH is shaking

When I first heard R.E.M.'s Dead Letter Office, I thought that this was an R.E.M. original. Shortly after, I saw on the Wikipedia article for the album that it was not an original, but a cover of a song by a band called Pylon. I'd seen the clip where Peter Buck says that Pylons is the greatest rock band on earth or something like that, so I thought "I must check out the Pylon version." Honestly, this version is a lot better than the R.E.M. cover, especially the guitar sound at the beginning.

I've always loved R.E.M.'s version of this song, and I just now got around to listening to the original. I'm surprised to find that R.E.M. didn't change it all that much. I assumed they had, because their version sounds like an R.E.M. original, and other stuff I've heard by Pylon is harsher and punkier than this song. The Pylon original already has a ton of atmosphere and is really great. R.E.M. just sort of smoothed off the edges and added a layer of R.E.M. haze. It's an excellent cover, but all of the credit goes to Pylon for creating this unique song in the first place.

Positively as earth-shaking as it was 30 some years ago.

Thanks for posting! I was playing this on guitar--based on the Rem cover and got curious about what the original sounded like. The Pylon original really grabs you and makes you think Rem's oblique take misses the mark.

This is great and will always be the original but in this guy's opinion R.E.M.'s version definitely lives up. Though I was a fan of the R.E.M. version before encountering the original by Pylon. Both have their stronger points and maybe a few weak ones too. Both rad in the end.

Pylon were around when the B-52's were, in 1978. Peter and Michael did not meet for another year, and did not form R.E.M. until early 1980.So yes, Pylon pre-date R.E.M.

No. I special ordered Gyrate in Minnesota when I was in 9th grade in 1981.. I also just had this 45 in my hand today as well, with the fish sticker.

The original from Dead Letter Office was way better, in my opinion. Or maybe that's just because I'm a stubborn REM supporter :D
