Paul Simon - "God Bless The Absentee" from Paul Simon's movie "One Trick Pony" (1980). One-Trick Pony is the fifth album released by Paul Simon, in 1980.

Paul Simon's One-Trick Pony was released concurrently with the film of the same name, in which Simon also starred. Despite their similarities, the album and film are musically distinct, each feature different versions of the same songs, as well as certain songs that appear exclusively on either the film or the album. The album is best known for the track "Late in the Evening" which was a hit for Simon in 1980, peaking at #6 in the U.S. Two of the tracks (the title song and "Ace in the Hole") were recorded live at the Agora Theatre and Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio in September 1979. The rest are studio cuts.

One Trick Pony is a 1980 film written by and starring Paul Simon. He plays Jonah Levin, a once-popular folk rock star who has not had a hit in 10 years, and who now opens for punk rock bands. He is trying to record a new album, but faces a number of obstacles, including a trendy but talentless producer who is trying to convince him to compromise his principles, and an indifferent record company which is pressuring him for something that will sell. He is also trying to restore his relationship with his former wife and his young son. The character wears a baseball cap for much of the film.

The five piece band of which Paul sings is:

Paul Simon: vocals, guitar, percussion

Steve Gadd: drums, percussion

Eric Gale: guitar

Tony Levin: bass

Richard Tee: piano, background vocals, tambourine

I love this album! It's very underrated. There are many other great songs there - Jonah is a lovely slow groovy jazzy piece, and How the Heart Approaches What it Yearns and Long, Long Day are beautiful!

This song is stunning, the soundtrack is really underrated. I don't know a remotely bad Paul Simon song, he's amazing!

Love this song, and thanks for the great songs Paul Simon. I have related to so many of them. I think your songs have made me realize who I really am. So happy you had the genius to write them down and perform them...Songs are easier to listen to than having to explain your feelings to someone else.

I wish Simon were the absentee. One, two good songs per album, tops. Great songs, sometimes, but usually a drag to get through.

this is an awesome song. my sister brought this movie to my attention. and it is a great telling of lacking to conform to your ideals and dreams. very very good movie, and the music for it is a sound of mr. simon's that I thought he could do, but never really heard. thanks sis. from- hollowmenrule
