Lyrics & Information

This is one of my favourite tracks by OMD. From their great 'Men From Earth' album.

Lyrics :-

There are people livin' in poverty

Their lives are just misery

Can't get enough relief

There are children needin' some food to eat

Shoes on their little feet

Lookin' to you and me

Why do we look away?

Think it will go away today

I think it's only fair

That we should all be asked to share

There are men among us who rule our lands

And though they're just fools in bands

Hold us all in their hands

There are people preaching their gods to me

Sayin' that I can't see

Yet they give me books to read

They say more's wrong than right

Some say more dark than light

I say it's how you think

That makes ya swim or sink

(Beautiful solo outro and end)

This band takes me back to a simplier time in my life. Living off the land and raising my family. Sometimes I wish those days would come back again.

Yeah, simple, direct, true and a little embarrassing. I can't help feeling a bit uncomfortable listening to it. It's like he decided to challenge the occasionally pretentious imagery popular at the time and just 'tell it like it is'.

Never forget buying Men From Earth on glorious vinyl in a bargain bin of my local department store (El Corte Inglés) for a mere 20 pesetas...¡1977!, my 16 candles in a dream-like haze of Country-rock and The Beatles, with The Jam and The Buzzcocks close to invade my brain...This fantastic tune has been since a favorite of mine on par with You Know Like I Know, If I Only Knew, Mr. Powell, Moon Is On The Rise, Spaceship Orion, Jackie Blue, Leatherwood... Long Live OMDaredevils, Viva Larry Lee!!!

Man, oh man, how relevant these lyrics are today. From a song written 35 years ago!! "There are people preaching their gods to me"... Larry Lee, you are so very underrated as a songwriter and as a singer, too. "I think it's only fair that we should all be asked to share"...indeed. I would like to think that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have just loved this song. This song is a great example of the power of music. "Why do we look away"....
