The 1988 SNL version of this song you are referring to, was like you said a "a better presentation". It has been imprinted on my mind forever.

Every concert in high school, we (the choir) would gather around the audience at the end and sing this a capella. Gave me goose bumps every time! I love it!!

This comes close to the studio version I heard on a demo tape I heard on a cassette tape I heard back in 1988. Still unable to find it. James Taylor! If you read this where is that studio version? Hard as hell to find! I am pretty sure that studio version has the same singers as in this youtube version..... Just not live.

This is James with his four-part backup singers. I saw them perform this 20 years ago at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

We saw some similar scenes in Hot Springs, VA...the "gorge hike" at The Homestead Resort.

Oh, and the same quartet (I believe) performed this arrangement on the January 23, 1988 Saturday Night Live, and, if you can believe it, it was an even better presentation.

A spotlight for his superior backup singers, that rise to equal status in this wonderful improvement over the studio version. David Lasley, Kate Markowitz, and the stellar Arnold McCuller.

What is that? I mean, seriously?! It's not real, nothing can be that incredible. Eric Clapton said at an interview about his influences, that when He heard the big pink album by the Band, he though "this is where music is supposed to have gone, this is it" , well I tell you all, this, right here, Mr. James Taylor - That Lonesome Road , that is music, that is is, and nothing more, nothing more could you ever ask for.
