HOLIDAY INN

Elton John

Madman Across the Water (1971)

Boston at last and the plane's touching down

Our hostess is handing the hot towels around

From a terminal gate to a black limousine

It's a ten minute ride to the Holiday Inn

Boredom's a pastime that one soon acquired

Where you get to the stage where you're not even tired

Kicking your heels till the time comes around

To pick up your bags and head out of town

Slow down Joe, I'm a rock and roll man

I've twiddled my thumbs in a dozen odd bands

And you ain't seen nothing till you've been

In a motel baby like the Holiday Inn

I've always thought that this was one of his very best tracks - beautiful arrangement - just another great song

How come no one writes music like this anymore? The musical expertise is incredible. Great songwriting, orchestras, beautiful harmonies - there is real musical expertise here. I have some great memories by this album.

I just can't stop listening to this song ,! and now it's been 43 years since I saw him live at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney when virtually all the stage collapsed due to a strong wind. I always remember Elton thanking Sydney for giving him another out of tune piano. LOL.

From Elton's only five star album. A perfect record - this is the weakest track on it and it's still a masterpiece!

In the early days Elton John and Bernie Taupin were balladeers of the highest order. *"Holiday Inn"*Boston at last and the plane's touching downOur hostess is handing the hot towels aroundFrom a terminal gate to a black limousineIt's a ten minute ride to the Holiday InnBoredom's a pastime that one soon acquiredWhere you get to the stage where you're not even tiredKicking your heels till the time comes aroundTo pick up your bags and head out of townSlow down Joe, I'm a rock and roll manI've twiddled my thumbs in a dozen odd bandsAnd you ain't seen nothing till you've beenIn a motel baby like the Holiday InnOh I don't even know if it's Cleveland or MaineWith the buildings as big and rooms just the sameAnd the TV don't work and the French fries are coldAnd the room service closed about an hour ago#mandolin

This comes from his early stuff, which was great. After 1973, his music sort of went downhill.
