This song, composed by Cocoanut Grove bandleader Gus Arnheim, and sung by Don Novis, was recorded for Victor on July 17, 1931. It was an immediate hit and it soon became Arnheim's theme song. But it was Ben Selvin who recorded it first about a month earlier. Besides Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians, it was also recorded by Ben Bernie, Bing Crosby, Russ Columbo, Irving Kaufman, Chick Bullock, Sam Lanin and Lee Sims.

Lombardos even played at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem where they were accepted by the black audience. I know that Armstrong admired Lebert Lombardo's trumpet backed by those sweet saxophones.12 years ago

The Guy Lumbago band never did a thing for me, but those girls from a better time, long ago, are a real treasure. Now, THOSE are real women. No, but it came out on VHS and I thought I put it on a DVD. I'll have to look. I just noticed that the intro to "Sweet and Lovely" is the same as the intro on "River Stay 'Way From My Door," which they recorded with Kate Smith around the same time.12 years ago

Soloists are as follows: Lebert Lombardo (Trumpet), Bruce Steege (Piano), Don Cooper (Trombone), and Jay Meyer (Scat Chorus). Jay later appeared in the 1994 PBS Special on Guy Lombardo, singing in the trio that was created for the band's performance on that tribute. The band was lead by Al Pierson.12 years ago

Guy Lombardo's group was always a well rounded band, playing the best of every genre. When Rock-N-Roll came along, they tackled it with every bit as much gusto as they did anything else. They always managed to keep everything in their style, though. Thank goodness.
