Sweet and Lovely

Words and music by Gus Arnheim, Harry Tobias and Charles N. Daniels

Performed by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians

Vocal refrain by Carmen Lombardo and trio

Recorded August 31, 1931

Columbia 2500-D

This song, composed by Cocoanut Grove bandleader Gus Arnheim, and sung by Don Novis, was recorded for Victor on July 17, 1931. It was an immediate hit and it soon became Arnheim's theme song. But it was Ben Selvin who recorded it first about a month earlier. Besides Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians, it was also recorded by Ben Bernie, Bing Crosby, Russ Columbo, Irving Kaufman, Chick Bullock, Sam Lanin and Lee Sims.

Lombardos even played at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem where they were accepted by the black audience. I know that Armstrong admired Lebert Lombardo's trumpet backed by those sweet saxophones.

The Guy Lumbago band never did a thing for me, but those girls from a better time, long ago, are a real treasure. Now, THOSE are real women. Compare them with the neurotics trying to get into combat roles in the military today. I think the world came to an end decades ago and no one will admit it.

Thanks! I looked her up on wiki and apparently she played WC Fields' daughter in "You're Telling me!" and lived to be 87.

The last blonde was Joan Marsh (1913-2000). She started out as a child actor in silent films and did mostly supporting roles in the 1930s and 1940s.

Wonderful sound quality and exquisite images, thanks! Is that last one Jean Harlow? There were so few blonde stars in the 30s, and I know it's not Dietrich.

Yes, these are transfers from the original 78s. Most of what I have posted are from the 1920s and 1930s.

Here's what I found that I put on DVD: The 1965 WGN Big Bands Special (30 minutes), GL on Jackie Gleason 1965 (About 5 mins long), The 1977 Stork Club Performance/Retrospective (About 45 Mins), The 1998 Documentary of GL (about an hour).

I think I may have been to your channel before, but this is the first time I have actually done any real looking around. And I'm glad I did. Are these recordings from your collection??? Are they the original 78's???

That's Lebert again! In case you didn't already know, I have Kate Smith's "River..." posted.

No, but it came out on VHS and I thought I put it on a DVD. I'll have to look. I just noticed that the intro to "Sweet and Lovely" is the same as the intro on "River Stay 'Way From My Door," which they recorded with Kate Smith around the same time.

Was the 1994 PBS Special ever released on DVD?

The flip side of this 45 is Carmen singing the Jimmy Durante hit "I Love You, I Do." It was Carmen's last recorded vocal.

Soloists are as follows: Lebert Lombardo (Trumpet), Bruce Steege (Piano), Don Cooper (Trombone), and Jay Meyer (Scat Chorus). Jay later appeared in the 1994 PBS Special on Guy Lombardo, singing in the trio that was created for the band's performance on that tribute. The band was lead by Al Pierson.

Thanks for the link to the updated "Cannonball"! I'm guessing that it's still Lebert on trumpet. Scat chorus is just like the original.

Guy Lombardo's group was always a well rounded band, playing the best of every genre. When Rock-N-Roll came along, they tackled it with every bit as much gusto as they did anything else. They always managed to keep everything in their style, though. Thank goodness. Here is a link to their 1965 re-recording of Cannonball (replace the word "dot" with an actual period) w w w dot guy lombardo music dot com/cannon dot mp3 (remove ALL the spaces as well)
