Del Shannon - Hats Off To Larry (Unforgettable)

This man shaped my childhood in the 80's (babysat by an old record collection) and it crushed me when he died. Now as an adult sufferer of depression and anxiety and having had a spout of alcoholism, I finally understand why he swallowed a bullet. RIP Del. You were rock and roll.

... and also he suffered from alcoholism and too many anti-depressants. Believe me, there is no way that anybody who has not had clinical depression can understand it. Imagine your worst sleeping nightmare, the dread, the sheer terror, the feeling that something awful will happen, the stomach so knotted that it hurts badly, physically, and that's it, on a good day. The bad days are indescribable.

I bloody love this guy and his songs, formed my youth. Sadly with depression, the sufferer enters another word, becomes a different person. Del was SO TALENTED.

I love this song but I just realized that if he had done the keyboard break in The Venture's/ Dick Dale surf style it would have been incredible! The rest of the song would have totally taken off into a huge climax! I do think he was one of the great geniuses of the 60's, like Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney. Maybe he didn't move around enough... anyone know why he committed suicide?

I work with a guitar player that used to work with Del Shannon. He has nothing shot of the ultimate respect for him as a musician ,a band leader, a writer and a Man. And a gig never goes by where he does not pay tribute to the genius and perhaps his mentor ,Mr. Dell Shannon. May he rest in peace.

Some of us remember this back in 1960. I had an LP of all his greatest hits. This was our favorite.hat's off to Terry..

This song and Runaway have almost identical arrangements, with the clavioline coming in for a solo break and then continuing for the rest of the song. I actually prefer this to Runaway.

Hehe, this sounds as a not so good version of Runaway. Does someone have some facts about the history behind this song?
