Your eyes are almost dead

Can't get out of bed

And you can't sleep

You're sitting down to dress

And you're a mess

You look in the mirror

You look in your eyes

Say you realize

Everybody goes

Leaving those who fall behind

Everybody goes

As far as they can,

They don't just care.

They stood on the stairs

Laughing at your errors

Your mother's dead

She said, "Don't be afraid."

Your mother's dead

You're on your own

She's in her bed

Everybody goes

Leaving those who fall behind

Everybody goes

As far as they can

They don't just care

You're a wasted face

You're a sad-eyed lie

You're a holocaust.

Normally prefer originals but I prefer Devotos /This Mortal Coil in terms of overall musicality. Of course this has a haunting qaulity of its own.

I listen to this several times a week, every week. I love it. In my opinion, one of the best songs ever made.

Was just watching Buffy, the episode "The Body", and thinking this would have been perfect for that episode.

Astonishing. I have no words. Describing this song as 'haunting' would be to cheapen it.

This song fills a much needed void for me in music. It describes perfectly how I feel after helping my mom fight leukemia for 10 years (my entire adult life thus far) and her dying a few months ago, at 48yrs old. So much struggle and there's nothing left. And then my cat died. And a pet bird. My grandpa (my father figure) also died in the last couple years. This song is musical validation, almost like they know exactly how I feel. If I could reach beyond the grave I would thank Alex Chilton from the bottom of my soul.

This, along with Joy Division's "Decades" are probably the most beautifully despondent dirges I have ever heard.

Does anyone know the cover by a female vocalist? It is my favorite version of this song, obviously not This Mortal Coil.
