An original video for Badfinger's 1974 song, 'Got to Get Out of Here', released on their LP 'Wish You Were Here'.

'Wish You Were Here' received positive reviews in Rolling Stone magazine upon its release and is sometimes considered to be the band's best work. However, it was pulled out of record stores in 1975, seven weeks after release because of a lawsuit between Warner Bros. music publishing and Badfinger's management.

Badfinger's Manager, Stan Polley, had been screwing Badfinger out of money their whole careers. Amidst hit records and support from The Beatles (Badfinger was originally signed by Apple Records, a label founded by The Beatles), Badfinger was broke, and lived together with their wives in the same house for a long period of time.

Frustration created by Polley would later lead to Pete Ham's departure from the group and eventually his suicide the same year. Ham hanged himself, just one month before him and his wife had been expecting their first born's birth. Ham included Polley's name on his suicide note, saying that he "is a soulless bastard" and that he'd take Polley with him. Polley was known to have ties with the mafia.

By 1977, both Joey Molland and Tom Evans were out of the music business. Mike Gibbins was still drumming as a session musician. Molland later described his dire economic circumstances: "Thank God I had guitars and I was able to sell some of that stuff. We were flat broke, and that's happened to me three times, where my wife and I have had to sell off everything and go and stay with her parents or do whatever. I installed carpeting for a while in Los Angeles and stuff like that. You do what you've got to do to survive." In London, Evans briefly had jobs insulating pipes, and driving a taxi.

In 1983, Evans and Molland had a heated argument over the phone, eventually leading to Evans committing suicide himself, by hanging, just as Ham had done less than a decade before.

It's a shame that a band with so much talent had such bad luck. They are known for classic records such as 'Day After Day', 'Come and Get It' (penned by Paul McCartney), 'Without You' and 'Baby Blue', but songs like this remain unheard. This is just one example of many underrated/overlooked songs by them.

I'm not a fan of Joey either...however, you do know Joey and Tommy were touring together as BF 3 years prior to his suicide, don't ya? 3 yrs does not constitute a lifelong battle of disappointments in the choices someone makes in their own lives...

Beautiful song... but i just hate the fact that i like it cause Joey sings it. I can't stand Joey and how he made Tom's life a living hell. Only the good die young. RIP to the musical geniuses Tom and Pete <3

I hope the calls don't show up, I would never UL. How anyone reacts to what they see or exp will affect them differently.Tom was upset his friend (knew him 6-7 yrs) hung himself or whatever we don't know what was going through his head. Joey is in a list of LIARS who have done the same to include Clare Torey/DarkSide/Moon, Matthew Fisher/Whiter Shade Pale, Rourke/Joyce-Smiths royalties for Morrissey/Marr tunes etc. My opinion, Tom didn't accept respon for his decisions & took the easy way out

Of course, there were multitudes of things that caused depression. In fact on the radio doc from U.K. Tom's wife says he was haunted by Pete's death and said he never got over seeing him hanging. But the fact he was so angry at Molland who fought against letting Tommy even have a gig, plus the fact Joey wanted his songwriters money from Without You, which is unheard of. Hope the calls turn up on YouTube. They give a lot of insight.

I have the CD that came with the Matovina book..so I've heard the phone calls. One must remember, the conversations were just a small piece of the problem which was going on from the past 15 years or so. Pete's death, Polley, Royalties, problems in relationships, Tommy/Joey drink/drugs throughout Airwaves, Tom's brother states he MAY have had mental issues, continuing trend bad business decisions after Polley/Milwaukee promoter he signed his life away on and the things we will never hear about

There will always be divergent opinions on suicide, but the fact is Joey Molland was a torment in Tom's life and on that recorded phone call Tom said, "I'm next to dying, basically, 'cause Joey Molland is giving me so much shit!!" And then the last call from Joey before he did "die" Tom's widow said she could hear Joey SCREAMING through the telephone form the next room.

I never said you did endorse anything...this isn't about you and I, my friend. Its fairly factual what Tommy and Pete did. You can try to camoflauge it any which way you want....but these two awesome songwriters gave up on turning their misfortunes around by choosing DEATH......and instead of me being a "woe is them" type of guy and stating the obvous, you are defensive. Hey, I love BF just like many do and have their original records and Dan's book..great music, bad choices in life....

oh no doubt about it....and it wasn't just Joey,....Mike and Bill Collins ended up with 1/5th share of the royalties as well. Could Mike and Bill contributed to his suicide. I would assume so....however, not so much to want to give in to them, by taking your own life. Joey is no angel, is a noted LIAR.....however, he didn't hold a gun to Tommy's head to sign Millions away from some Milwakee Promotor who was suing his butt. Tommy quit on his Family, his Fans, and his Life...facts are facts

You're overlooking the factor of Joey Molland in Tom's death. If you heard the phone calls from the Matovina book, Joey was stopping Tom's gigs and trying to get money from "Without You" which was sustaining Tom's life. Apparently, Badfinger had never been splitting money before and I don't blame Tom for rejecting the pressure to income share a song Joey didn't write. Tom made the final choice. But Joey helped make his life miserable and at a standstill, just as Polley's moves did to Pete.

Well no shit! I don't recall endorsing suicide. I find it strange how some seem to enjoy spending their time condemning the souls of those who've already suffered to satisfy their own self righteousness.

I think of the selfishness one leaves behind when they feel all of life's hopes/dreams can't be reversed. Try convincing loved ones who are left behind who must now fix what was handed to them, how it feels....you and I can't answer that for them....

Ugh, sorry, shouldn't let my anger get the best of me, but do you have any clue what it's like to be in that dark of a place psychologically? And the comment you replied to was about my own feelings having been through betrayal, so why be a dick? So you can preach from your armchair?

They worked so hard for so long and had nothing. Nothing. I don't condone suicide, but lacking empathy for the depth of the pain in their hearts, really? Do you think people commit suicide because they think it will be a fun experience? Can you imagine what pain they had to have been in to not have any hope left? Non empathetic judgmental people such as yourself sure as hell aren't helping to make the world a more welcoming and hopeful place! There's something for you to think about!

Tom didn't need convincing Stan was a buggart.....just Pete. The problem Tom had was continuing to make poor decisions in life until he just felt he would be in a better place where Pete was... I really can't emphasize with these guys....life isn't that bad to give up on a near born child just because you signed some shady deals with a crook...

As a rather reclusive introvert, these lyrics are really close to my heart. I went through a period where I was nearly Agoraphobic, hardly left my room let alone the house. I was betrayed multiple times in my formative years, so beside the obvious tragedy of Badfinger which is evident enough to all, it's really personal to me...I know how that feels. Such a shame no one could convince Pete and Tom that it could get better. Don't hate Joey for surviving, though. He had to be at his wit's end.

There are a lot of songs that refference what was going on. The poor guys. Even if they had figured Polley out for the con man he was a bit sooner, I wonder if it even would have made a difference, given all the contracts and what he'd already stolen. This is why I tell any happy go lucky person who speaks of the goodness of humanity in absolutes not to be so trusting, for their own good. Good people suffer because they're too good to see the evils in others.

Loved this back in the 70s. Haven't heard it in 30 years, all I had was a little snippet I taped off the radio. Great song from a band who deserved better, a real injustice.
