Van Halen "Unchained" guitar lesson. The next Riff of the Day uses a CMAT Mods Brownie to convey the same crisp yet warm saturation coming from EVH's Marshall SLP. Unchained has a heavy low end that comes from first tuning down half a step (Eb) and then dropping the low string to C#, just how you would drop D. The MXR M-117R Flanger also highlights the chugging sound with a smooth sweep from its BBD based circuit. This riff certainly demands that you have your timing figured out. The main riff has two variations of when landing on the first beat plus, the pre-chorus takes some practice with its odd time feel. All in all, Van Halen "Unchained" is a simple riff that doesn't require any flashy playing or finger tapping. Enjoy your Riff of the Day guitar lesson!

Damn man. This song IS rock and roll. Eddie's riffs punch you in the face and gets your blood flowing to pick up the guitar. Awesome and thank you

Wow, this is a great lesson! I always thought this was kinda hard to play, but you made it look simple and now I'm close to nailing it.

I know for a fact that Eddie is only playing a full power chord on the D. The rest is played with triads. He even mentions it in an interview. If you're going to teach the song, teach it right. After all, there really is only one EVH.

why are so many concerned with the gear? Like if you had just the audio, that you would know the difference. quit listening with your eyes people.

I like your medium speed breakdown of the chords and progressions. That's all most of us need to learn a song.

Really nice job here! Nailed it with the pedals and your playing style. There's more to this song than I realized. Thanks!

I do like those Reverend guitars. Style is unique but not ugly. $1k range price is reasonable but not ridiculous. #guitars

Thanks Andy... very humble, "one of the few I can play"... I got odds you were nailing eruption when you were 15.. Keep them coming, by my count another 30 videos & I'll be ready to buy a pedal...

I started playing guitar in 1977 at age seven. This demo just reminds me how lucky I feel to have grown up listening to Van Halen as a kid and through high school etc. What a brilliant tune from a genius album!

OMG you got that tone out of a DDRi? What manner of dark sorcery in going on in that pedal?
