Yep, I totally remember that moment. That was so cool. Sadly, you don't see such raw performances at music award shows these days.

I remember that performance at the AMAs, especially when Tommy went into the audience with his guitar.

Sounds like "Kings of Leon" were a bit influenced by Tommy . I'm a Philly boy and I've been lucky enough to see most of the local acts that comprised a GREAT music scene.Seen Tommy a few times , great performer .

This was a great song, and around this time, Tommy & the Young Rumblers seemed poised for superstardom. They were on the radio and on MTV on a regular basis. Plus, Tommy was a very likeable and charismatic frontman who played lead guitar. I remember they closed the American Music Awards in '89, and they brought the house down. I think they fit in well with the roots rock scene of the '80s, but when the '90s and grunge arrived, most other types of rock bands simply got ignored.

During one of his guitar solos, I think it was the TLA, he starts duckwalking......right into the ladies room! Chicks started running out as he waltzed in....funny as hell!

Completely agree. Followed them since their Delaware days and just say them at the Blockley last weekend. I always preferred them as a 3 piece band, myself. He is such an amazing blues guitar player, but Rick Chertoff "popped' them out and they just weren't the same. But they still sound good today- it was a fantastic show.

@TaconyBill. Me and Flamin Harry (remember him?) had a long discussion about this after one of his gigs a while back. It was all in the production, Rick Chertoff included. The demo tapes that these guys sent into MMR were raw and rough and ten times better than the final product, which Sony wanted to be more "polished" and mainstream. A damn shame if you ask me.

What is the common denominator why great Philly bands didn't make the big time? Rumblers, Hooters, Hazard, John Eddie, Bricklin, A's, Southside Johnny. And more I've missed, Lots of great music from this town that many others will not share in . Too bad for them. Frustrating as a Philly Music fan.

I like the version on the "Walkin' On The Water" LP with the piano better.
