This is a very literal translation, to preserve its original meaning in chinese.

Romanized to the closest sound, not Pinyin.

Sang by Jackie Chan

Format:

Mandarin

Mandarin sound in English (Transliterated to the closest sound)

English translation

Lyrics not sang by Li Shang, or Jackie Chan, is in parenthesis ()

*note that the Mandarin sound in English is transliterated, not pinyin, since people that don't have the understanding of pinyin couldn't pronounce it properly. It is transliterated to the closest sound in English

匈奴(xiong nu): Xiongnu, enemy of the dynasty in ancient China. Disney used the abbreviation Huns to make it easier to pronounce and understand.

男子漢(nan zi han): Literally means manly man. Although sounds awkward because there is no such usage in English, basically means to tell a man to be manly, or "be a man".

Something to note in this song is the lyrics quite formal, not something that one would speak in a conversation, and not as easy to understand as normal modern chinese. I don't know why Disney did this since kids will not understand most parts of this song. The only reason I can think of is that because this story happened in ancient China, and they wanted the lyrics to fit in this timeframe.

Because of this, almost all words has an idiomatic meaning, which means translation is quite difficult. I try to stick to the idiomatic translation as much as possible, meaning that most translations are not word for word.

Thanks for making this video. As an ABC, it's nice to see the Chinese to English translation from a Chinese person and that this version of the song has a different meaning slightly. The lyrics of the Chinese version sounds more Chinese than the way they wrote it into English for the American version of this song. The American version is obviously written more for the way Americans talk.
