The Confederate flag should be put back on the State House. It does not represent hate. The myth that it does is pure yankee propaganda. Thousands of South Carolinians, fighting for their homes and families, died under that flag. Now their legacy is disgraced. It's sad.

I would like to say something along that line. Coming from Barbados parting at the boat yard & the harbour lights. It's very disappointing not to see my favorite band continue their journey. I was fortunate to be in th audience when Hootie perform at pine nob a couple of years ago. It was my best concert ever. Music for me is not who make it . But the lyrics in the song. Every song on the Rear cracked view album is a favorite on mine. Nothing would please me more but to see the band back together again.Regards. Curtis.

This song is suppose to be a protest song when the confederate flag was flying on top of the south Carolina state building. supposedly he got death threats over it,

I have a question! When any white man looks at Michael Jordan, do they see some black guy or an extremely good basketball player and a man? What if respect is just knowing one's own dreams and wanting someone else to know them, and asking that someone else to tell them there's.

Darius Rucker is one of my favorite singers of all time! I really like this song, and I agree with the opening lyrics that the CSA flag needed to come down from the state capital building, but I'm hesitant to tell anyone to reject "heritage not hate." I think any symbol can be used for hate, but if people want to reform anything from hate to unity I'm not going to stop them even if I resent people defining the South by the CSA. My Southern heritage was Unionist.

Obviously Darius is discussing the trepidation he had as a child toward his Physical Education (PE) classes. He dreaded the class enough to make him "wanna turn and run away". This much is obvious ;-)

My second favorite song off Cracked Rear View (behind Hannah Jane). The guys need to get back together ASAP because the greatest disappointment in my life is that I've been a Hootie fan since CRV and have never once seen them in concert.

Hard to believe these guys were never influenced by Skynyrd. This song has southern fried rock written all over it.

This song is about PREJUDICE and intolerance with people who don't LOOK LIKE YOU. It's about people who don't know how to accept eachother and only sticking with their OWN KIND, rather than talking and reaching outto others who may be of a different ethnicity or race.. It could be about class predudice also.

I do like the song, though. I just don't agree with all the lyrics.

I'm sure he regrets the harshness of some of these lyrics today considering that he tours with many bands and country artists that'll fly the rebel flag while performing live. Unfortunately, many DO use it as a symbol of hate, but you can't stereotype such a large group of people like that.

Wow almost 18 years later and yet the message of this song is still so powerful!! Without a doubt one of the most underrated songs of all time.. Awesome..

Hootie rules. I never thought this song was about a flag. It is about experiencing bigotry and racism in America.
