The band's name originated from two of Darius Rucker's childhood acquaintances. There were two boys in Rucker's childhood choir group--one with owl-like eyes (Hootie) and the other with puffy Blowfish-like cheeks. Though Rucker is commonly thought of as Hootie and the other members as the Blowfish, Rucker has clarified multiple times that he is not Hootie, and the other band members are not the Blowfish. The band name is completely separate from the band members.

This is a powerful song. A very close friend of mine died a few months back and for some reason or another this song struck us all in a profound (us being my band). He use to come and listen to us play all the time and whenever we play this tune, idk its like hes there with us. We altered the lyrics a little. In the months following the loss of my mom my ex and I attended an amazing Hootie concert at Oak Mountain Amphitheater. When they played this song the sky, as if sensing my pain, opened up in a heavy rain mixing with the tears running down my face. It was both a heartbreaking and cathartic moment in my healing process. Love these guys, love this song.

@tlmaroney1 I am on the verge of losing my grandmother to cancer and like your husband, my grandmother raised me since childhood and she looks upon me as her favorite grandson out of 19 grandchildren. I'm scared, I don't know what to do for her as I've done all I can. Time heals all wounds but I will miss her and god will bless her and your husbands grandmother. Be well and stay well always.
