In response (2 years on, no less) to the sax solo: It's Sam Donahue, Jerry's father. Keep in mind, this version was just a run-through, a rough idea of how it would go. Although the lyrics were improved on for the "North Star" album, this version is also a keeper. Sandy could absolutely barf in the studio and it would be brilliant. It's a shame there aren't more vids of her. She was exceptional in every way.

Great sax playing, detached from the previous version of Fotheringay. It´s a shame this lost gem had to wait for postumous Fotheringay 2 to be released

Absolutely, the sound they developed when Sandy was there - fantastic! I'd not want to detract from either Judy Dyble or Linda Thompson - both of whom have voices that have taken me to really beautiful places in my head; but Sandy was ... really a folk singer in the floor-singer sense. A bit husky, and just .... dare I say - sexy? *blush*

Thanks. I love Fotheringay, but I love Fairport more (Sandy Denny era). What a shame she took off so soon: 'What we did...', 'Unhalfbricking', 'Liege & Lief'. They just got better each time didn't they? I feel cheated! But then what do I know about the dynamics of the band? Forty years later Sandy's voice and music bewitches. To this day no English folk singer can hold a candle to her.

What a song for CNN's Piers Morgan to introduce an interview with an NRA rep.

Thanks for uploading this - it's great. I enjoyed the guitar solo. Someone outdid Richard Thompson for once. And Sandy's voice is much more immediate - like she's in the room with you. However, at the end I couldn't stop thinking about when Father Ted and Dougal were writing that song for 'Eurovision': 'We've got to lose that sax solo!'

Wow! I never knew this version was out there. This far outdoes the version on Sandy's solo album

IndigoJo: The sax solo is played by none other than Sam Donahue (Jerry's father). He played in Woody Herman's orchestra. Obviously, this was an earlier take, as the lyric hadn't quite come together (Note the last verse starts out with "I am condemned" which became "Condemn me not" later. This song reflects Gen. Smedley Butler's sentiment, who wrote the book "War is a Racket".

Who plays the sax? Never heard it played it with a sax before. Really different.

When a group of true musical artists who shared the love of traditional folk got together at the right time and place, the result is Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. Right through the heart !!!

@robertlaberge Yea, absolutely... Gerry Conway created much rhythmic art which was completely unprecedented.
