Letterman's crew, with Paul Shaffer leading, were some of New York's best studio musicians; a couple of run-throughs with the girls and they were set, but these four always prided themselves as a fully-contained band. Later, they added off-stage keyboards and such when needed.

I think the biggest issue with their performing without instruments on a major television program is that it suggests they are phonies -- a kind of modern Girl Group, where all the instruments are played by session musicians.But as we all know, the gals were -- and are -- terrifically talented musicians. They should have showed that off nationwide.
