It has to do with mass pop as opposed to talent I think. When you listen to stuff from the 1990s or earlier, most of the really bad stuff hasn't lasted whereas the better stuff has. A lot of pop songs from the 1980s and 90s were horrible too, we just don't hear them played much anymore. Also try listening to hits from the 1950s. Even if country is your thing it almost *all* sounds the same and imho not really "better" than today. There are exceptions of course.
