New Zealand's Finest ... Saw them in a small club in Oz when they were promoting this album ... the smell of grease paint under lights , their " insane " hair and twisted looks , completed a very surreal experience ... Outstandingly artistic ... love this album.

first song I heard by them. Lucky enough to see them in DC at the Cellar Door in 77. I am as knocked out today as I was then.

This cut is the original version recorded for their AUS/NZ only release "Mental Notes" in 1975. This IS the original version of the song. The alternate take that many other folks are familiar with is the re-recorded version that's fairly similar and yet markedly different that was released on their second album, 1976's "Mental Notes" (as it was known everywhere outside the Antipodes) aka "Second Thoughts" (as it was known in AUS/NZ because "Mental Notes" had already been released there the previous year).

man, it's sucks, everytime i try to get anything from 2'nd notes i get stuff i don't want, i want to hear the original, i understand this conflicts with peoples egos, but i just want the original.....

This is so so so so so so so so goood. The real Split Enz from back in the day. Pre- I got You, with Phil Judd (The Swingers). The song is an epic masterpiece. Takes Floyd, Supertramp, and modern music that hadn't even been created yet and spanks their butts. Love love love love love love.

I think I downloaded the original from Napster back in the day but ??? I live in the USA and I've loved the Finn Bros since I first heard them so whatever I can get I love. So grateful for YouTube! Oh yeah, Tim Finn is still HOT!! The grey hair makes him hotter even if he can't hit those high notes now (6 months in a leaky boat). Yum!

No matter which version this is, the song is truly amazing. I went years as an Enz fan and never heard this tune. My loss.

I also prefer the other version which I for the longest time thought was the original. I didn't even know of this version until I bought a compilation album in the late 90's or early 00's. So I guess I have to cherish my old vinyl recordings then. lol

...As for the ¨needle noise,¨ if you could afford an ELP turntable - I can´t afford one, sadly - were you to get a hold of an import copy, and play it back on one of these machines - it would be pure vynil bliss - according to demos I have seen with albums...cheers.

Not just hard--impossible. Mellovisions is right about the 2 versions. A few years back I e-mailed Peter Green (Split Enz band manager), and he said you can't get the UK version of "Mental Notes" (released under the name "Second Thoughts" in AU and NZ to avoid confusion since they already had the first version of "Mental Notes"). I prefer the other version as well. I had a friend record it to CD from the LP I bought in college, so it has the needle noise, but I love it nonetheless.

I appreciate it. Thank you! for responding to my request, and for taking the time and trouble to do this. I am checking the other songs from Mental Notes, also posted on youtube. Save for this track - all others seem to be the same tracks on your import - which is the same version that I had. About your question posted to the forum, earlier - I am afraid that I have no answer to contribute. Except that I think it likely that the US/European releases were different ones..Same is true for Beatles.

That is the version I have on my import album! There is the line "It's the story of my life". It is said differently than on the version posted on this page and no one says "Stranger than Fiction" on the version I have. I will try to post. I am an old guy and not great at figuring out technical stuff.

I agree- that's the version that I need too, but I can't find it anywhere

...I wonder if the version that you got has the ¨...the story of my life...¨ line followed by an awesome explosion of guitar riffs and solos. (I loved those riffs...They´re certainly not here.) Because that was the one that I had. But I don´t see it posted on youtube. If that´s the one you had - would you try to post on yt? If you do - let mw know! :-)
