The Choral Sea by the Split Enz, from their album "True Colours" (1979/1980)

Vinyl Pressings came in a variety of colour combo covers, with a laser etched record. Seldomly used, laser etching was to be a way to deter bootleg copies from being produced. The Split Enz 7" 45rpm release "One Step Ahead" (1981) also came laser etched.

The Choral Sea, an instrumental composition that finishes off the True Colours LP, is a highly dancable new wave/disco hybrid, and sadly, unlike anything else found on the album. The closest comparison may be to Moroder, in terms of contemporaries at the time of release, but I wouldnt be surprised if the brothers Hartnoll (that's Orbital, for the layman) were playing this to death when younger and were inspired by it when it came time to record tracks such as Impact, Lush 3, Monday, or even Beached.

Now for the boring stuff:

The 5th

Underrated band back then and even more underrated and even unknown internationally now, they did some truly unique and new music for the years and should have much much greater acknowledgement in music history as innovative pioneers than they do or probably ever will, while people crap on about Genisis Split Enz were doing far more interesting stuff.

I heard this album the first time at the library of the University of Maine in Orono in 1981. I was a junior in high school and supposedly doing a school sponsored college tour, but I really went just so I could hang out with my boyfriend all day. I think it was my first ever exposure to New Wave, and I haven't looked back since. When I was home, I bought the album. It looked great on a turntable. :)

A great track from the album. The sound is a bull roarer at the beginning and end. Sound is made by revolving a long tube around.Always listened to this at max volume driving along the Red Sea Corniche in Jeddah,Saudi Arabia after a days diving on the superb coral reef there. Very evocative of great times past.

... a heady tune ... neat how that arpeggiator keyboard effect is tweaked from six months in a leaky boat ... this was one i always liked for forcing my mind out of the square ... i've invented cool things to the tune of this song. why aren't there more like this? it's like they really wanted to do techno, but couldn't quite get there with guitars ... it's great sometimes when all the witchcraft is out of the mix and the musos have a go. useful words weren't designed to rhyme.

@JamesMcRae78 And a better tune than I Hope I Never, IMO. Although I think it owes a little to Space's "Magic Fly".

I used to listen to this song as a 7 year old boy stealing my mums records! It was the B side to 'I Hope I Never'!!

@cynflux - I ended up finding out directly from Eddie Rayner and Mike Chunn that it is whirly tubes making that sound. They said all of the guys had them, and that it was probably Noel's idea.
