This song, while it says it's about betrayal on the album cover has it's own meaning to me.Picture a soldier and his friend. If you will, imagine the war taking the turn that it does. The friend that sees his squad mate die and is unable to save him. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot forgive himself. The friend asks him to promise to look after his family. And he agrees. It isn't easy. Every time you see his wife, such a pretty young thing, so devoid of life after losing her husband, you are struck with the same pang of guilt. You should have died. He should have survived. The anthem of 'you should have been there' has two meanings. You should have been the one dying, survivor. And your friend should have been with his wife and kids. And as you talk to his grave, your eyes burn. You can't hold it. His wife doesn't blame you; you blame yourself. The weather doesn't let up, almost as if it one with your emotions. During the talk, she tried to put up a front of being fine, but you knew she didn't want to worry you. You hurt her, or so you believe. In your core, you blame yourself. You have survivor's guilt. And you always will.

don't like the way you're dressed, mate. It's too showy. That's not your thing.

This video makes me inexpressibly happy. (Not sure that was its intent, but there you have it.)

It's a happy reflective, "Man, you shoulda been there" not an accusatory one. JoCo inception.

When I listen to this song I always imagine that it all takes place just after a man's funeral (obviously). However, instead of it being the widow's lover I view it more as the widow's parent consoling her after his death. Then the chorus seems to be the typical protective father saying "I told you to take care of my little girl." when he really says. "You should have been there."

That or is she is just considering leaving him, potential alternate romantic partner or no.

Good analysis...but with respect I must point out a common error. "You SHOULD'VE been there". "Should've" is a contraction of "Should have" and many people mistakenly hear it as "Should of". Peace.

Whenever I hear this song, I think of Arrow's side kick being in love with his dead brother's wife

Yeah i think by it's title and the first lyrics of the song its mean't to mislead you about the songs meaning. Either he is dead or isn't around seems to be the message and him saying "You should of been there" is actually sincere. "Getting home, too late to go" "I'm not saying anything" seems to imply the singer is interested or having sex with his wife. Regardless it's a touching song and a good addition to a great album.
