One of the most formidable showcases for the Bowie's voice. One fantastic lyricism, poignant, desperate, nonetheless airy. Spatiotemporal melodic ballad, which might as well have been written today. From Lodger, 1979 album, often wrongly overlooked. "A Reality Tour".

@INNERVISION: I totally agree with your comment. Most of David's songs contain a special message coming from very far...

I've never understood why Lodger isn't generally recognised as one of Bowie's finest albums. Even today, it still sounds fresh, ambitious, experimental and brave to me. I guess a lot of people simply don't appreciate what he's actually doing in that album. For instance, I love the fact that Boys Keep Swinging uses exactly the same chords, key and structure as Fantastic Voyage. Two great songs created from the same starting point. But most folk I know haven't noticed that until I mention it.

@VampireBowie Exactly. A criticism of our civilization, a heartfelt antinuclear appeal combining realism to logical projection, in this album which is the musical meeting among many different cultures. Bowie had already given a masterly message, outlining a profile of this oppressive system on Earth, as seen by an Alien. Album and messenger will be listened more carefully later. Thanks so much for the comment, my dear friend.

Bowie himself has written that this song was related to the threat of nuclear holocaust. He has stated that the "depression" referred to, was that of world leaders who seemed to be imposnig their misery on the rest of society...
