Lagolop's comments on Yiddish are unscholarly and incorrect. He's a "nudnik" (an annoying boor) who takes pleasure in denigrating the wonderful Yiddish language. His so-called Yiddish "knowledge" would probably fit on a pinhead, and he's sure to fail any exam in the language. We challenge him to write a paragraph in correct Yiddish. Yiddish is an independent Jewish language which can boast of an extremely rich literature (prose and poetry), fascinating folklore and music, and its own brand of humor.

Modern Yiddish is light years away from Middle High German: in pronunciation, structurally, grammatically, and has been thoroughly hebraïcized and slavicized, not to speak of its own independent and original development.

The Yiddish milieu does not need these atrociously pronounced renditions of Yiddish songs. The Germans should have thought about Yiddish culture and music before they exterminated more than six million innocent Jewish men, women and children. The singer has no conception of Yiddish phonology and his interpretation has no authenticity whatsoever. It's a mockery and an insult to those know and love the expressive Yiddish language.

+Marcineczek1995 Yes, for a german listener it is possible to understand a lot - if he is someone who know german from the time of 1200 ("Mittelhochdeutsch") he understands nearly everything. Since then the german language (like english, too) have changed in some points - Yiddish is very conservative in these things.

That's not the point. He wanted to know if German speakers understand Yiddish on some level.

You are correct :) In fact, Yidish began in the Rhineland and is based on Medieval High German. But is was written in Hebrew script and also contains some Hebrew words. When the Jews migrated into Slavic lands they also incorporated some Slavic borrow words but to this day Yidish is still mainly archaic High German. But when you think of it, ALL European languages have borrow words in them.

I think most people that speak other High German dialects (Swiss, Austrian, Bavarian) can understand Yidish quite well. At least that is what I've been told by those speakers. Yiodish is MUCH older than standard German (Hochdeiutch) although they have the same roots.

It takes some effort and a general knowledge of languages, but in due course you understand a lot of it- which, in the end, makes you feel the closeness of yiddish and german. And the sadness of them being torn apart again, and of all issues related, if you know what I mean...
