Damn I don't know if those who commented on how they hate this version is deaf or just absolutely souless and cannot hear how she empties herself. You must be absolutely dead in body, soul and spirit not to feel this. She absolutely brings me to tears. I know Barbara sang the song and she did an awesome job but with Whitney I feel the annointing when she sings it! #art #gift

Raymon Smith, who leaves personal insults on here to justify his lack of taste in music. Criticises others for not showing a face, but disables his account to prevent receiving email replies. What a coward.

Whitney Houston was a great talent, but THIS time, with THIS song, she failed - with too much oversouling and wandering way too far away from one of the greatest pop melodies of the last century.

Whitney Houston on THIS particular rendition of Alfie did NOT do this song any justice here. This song was not meant for vocal gymnastics but rather aDeeper, more wistful, introspective and reflective quality of emotional content. For a VERY fine example of that I would suggest two versions.Dionne Warwicks timeless classic and Mr.Johnny Mathis.Particularly Johnny Mathis's Version. This song is supposed to flow with a certain seamless continuity and in The Warwick and Mathis version it DOES. Here there are several breaksIn her delivery and spots of uneveness. This song was not meant to be sung in the style of a typical pop belting manner.I would like to have heard Whitney sing this earlier in her career BEFORE she became intoxicated with going the route of the power singer. Here if you listen carefully the deterioration of her voice is already beginning to show through in spots. Also YES, she is using a closed throat. This was not in my view one of her better moments. Also some sincere and simple piece of advice to those of you who seem to be getting a bit annoyed simply because others do not find this performance to be stellar. Take a deep breath and drop a thousand.Everyone is entitled to express their viewpoints and should be able to do soWithout being referred to as idiots or such other immature and ignorant nonsense. This seems to be a trend whenever an "iconic" figure is being assessed with a balanced view as opposed to a distorted rose colored lense. They are not exempt from being critiqued like any other individual. Muhammad Ali, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley etc... if analysed with a less than glorified view by someone else ,the supporters of these figures act as though they LOSE their collective MINDS. Just adding some perspective here. Cheers.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Bacharach is a great melody writer. This rendition ignores the essence/ strength of the song for the sake of ego. Whitney was one of the best singers in history. You would never suspect that from this performance. She was actually even out of tune in spots.

I have always said the world's greatest vocalist is Whitney. This song, this performance, makes my case.

Whitney's ill-suited to this classic.

Joss Stone's performance of this song is highly superior to everyone who has sung it.

With all due respect, I like Dionne Warwick's, Cilla Black's, Barbra Streisand's and Cher's version better. BUT--try to find Whitney doing the 1986 Statue of Liberty - 4th of July Show singing "The Greatest Love of All"--pure perfection visually & audibly.
