Always love the Doobie Brother's original, but this version is also awesome! <3

Love the fake vinyl sound at the beginning, a sort of respectful doffing of the cap to the original early 70s sound. An utterly sublime song (surely one of the most complex musical constructions in the pop-rock genre...) treated to a truly epic production. Fabulously mazy strings, massive and intricate vocals, octivided bass and beautifully weighted rhythmic pacing with sensitively restrained drums (no toms). Every single beat gives an excellent account of itself. Try listening to the original version after this!!!

It's an incredibly difficult song and Peter does a stellar job on it with his own interpretation, and a nod to one of his inspirations, Mike McDonald and the Doobie Brothers.Bit of trivia, Mike wrote the music and Kenny Loggins the lyric mostly. Mike had struggled to put the thing together for a while and was playing the chorus on keys as Kenny approached his apartment "Whatever that was, lets do that first" was their first face to face conversation according to Mike. Kenny recorded it first and then the Doobs cut it (later covered by Aretha Franklin) although they struggled with the timing which switches on the original. At one point they had 15+ takes on the deck and producer Ted Templeman finally saved the day - the original 45 single release is at least 4 or 5 pieces of different takes which of course makes it a nightmare to sing live these days (as Mike still does). The twist in this tale is that Mike won a Grammy for the song (and more for the album) even though a famous musician friend (possibly Steve Lukather or Jeff Porcaro) told him at the time to bury it because it would sink the Doobies. Thanks for posting - I will look to buy this album from Peter now.Much love

Superb stuff. Great production all round & great vocals from Peter Cox - sick harmonies in the chorus too!

I agree with you, Keith Taylor, however, Peter and Richard always add their own twist to covers. That's probably why, they are successful and being able to sing, is a great advantage (((◠‿◠)))

Covers can be a death knell for some singers, but Peter has done a great job on this!
