Great video. The early Orthicon video recording system adds to the vintage flavor!

Although this performance seems kinda corny you have to hand it to the rooftop singers for giving props to Gus Cannon who was 70 and poor at the time. It gave him some money to live on and he received a recording contract due to the interest in this song. A lot of people thought of all folk music as public domain and recorded without paying the composers or even giving righting credit (Led Zeppelin was guilty of this)

On February 3, 1963, The Rooftop Singers with “Walk Right In” was at the top of the pop chart in the USA. Erik Darling, formerly of the Tarriers and the Weavers, put together a trio specifically to record this. Joining Darling in The Rooftop Singers were Bill Svanoe and Lynne Taylor. Darling and Svanoe both used 12-string guitars on the recording. They had to wait six months to record the song for Gibson to construct the guitars.

Fun to hear (and see) the original again from when I was a kid, but love what Welsh singer Mary Hopkin and the group Sundance did with it in 1981 – worth a listen (even if some of the instrumentation is a tad over-the-top – early 80s style!)

This great oldie from another era was the first song I heard as a young teen that got me into playing the guitar. The video is great.
