No no no no what the fuck is this shit? Where's the power? And the soul? The great thing about Slayer is that they're able to give awesome thrash tunes without too much technicality, but this is just... Stupid. Terrible cover.

There have been so many covers of this song since it’s release in 1986 by everyone from countless garage bands, to bigger artists like Havok, Malevolent Creation, and of course Vader. Most of the covers I have heard honestly made me cringe, personally offending me as a devout Slayer fan. But Vader’s cover is different. Instead of trying to emulate Slayer’s style, they took the tune in an entirely new direction. It is dangerous for a thrash band to cover a Slayer tune (even though thrash bands are most likely to do it) because unless you absolutely nail it, you put yourself at risk of pissing off a whole bunch of Slayer fans, not the right people to piss off. Vader stayed true to their own classic “Vader sound” instead of trying to replicate something that has been attempted and failed time and time again. They drop the tuning and stick with their deep guttural death metal vocals which creates such a massive brutal sound. There are three distinct moments in this cover that really pop out at me. After the classic rain intro the main riff hits as it usually does, but once the entire band comes in you feel like you were just smacked in the face by a flaming wall of cinder blocks coated in hydrofluoric acid. After “your time slips away” the beat drops to half time and the lead riff comes in only in the right channel, but then the riff comes in to full stereo and the drummer starts relentlessly smashing the cymbals, and you can’t help but bang your head to this display of pure brutal glory. The third spot that sticks out is after the face melting solo that we all know and love when they take the train wreck car crash of a finale and speed the normal rhythm track up before hanging out on the bottom chord like Slayer did. When they do finally reach that bottom chord, the screeches and squeals continue, reminiscent of lost souls screaming from deep within the fiery depths of hell. These few tweaks along with the overall death metal feel of the tune makes this the most badass, well done cover of Raining Blood ever attempted which we can all agree makes metalheads everywhere rejoice.

I had this version blasting out of my car once when the jehova's witnesses came round, perfectly timed- pulled up next to them to pick up my sister and her fella just as it got to 37 seconds!
