Hayley then aged 16 singing "Tonight We'll Light A Candle" at the Festival of Remembrance, Saturday 8th November 2003, at the Royal Albert Hall in London in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen.

The specially written lyrics are set to a new arrangement (for this event) of the New Zealand traditional song "Pokarekare Ana".

This performance showcases a young Hayley at her very best, singing at the age of only 16, just a few months after becoming Internationally known.

The video was originally recorded by Gerrit Kroeze for HWI and was recently re-discovered in the HWI vaults. It is from an original windows media file compressed at only 256 kbps and has needed considerable enhancement and editing to make it as presentable as possible in 2009. Editing and restoration by Dave Ludlow.

Lyrics (from the HWI archives ).

Tonight we'll light a candle

Light a candle to remember

To remember all our loved ones

And the days we left behind.

Oh! Fare thee well

Dear long lost friends

May peace be with you

'Till we meet again.

They would want us to be happy

To be happy we're together

We're together 'cause we love them

More than words could ever say.

Oh! Fare thee well

Dear long lost friends

May peace be with you

'Till we meet again.

See the candle is still burning

And the world will go on turning

There's a light above the horizon

And it's there for all to see.

We remember you

Dear long lost friends

May peace be with you

'Till we meet again.

May peace be with all of us

'Till our journey's end.

With the combination of Hayley Westenra and an interesting title, I thought I'd like this song. I had no idea it was the tune of Pokarekare Ana :D I love that song. This song has such moving lyrics and I don't even like war related stuff. How does Hayley have that power... She's just amazing ^.^

Simply excellent! This is the first time I've heard her sing this in English. Almost better than the Maori version.

My partner loved this when he saw it on the Festival of Remembrance and I could never find this version. Magically I found it the week after he died and we played it at his funeral. A very poignant song sung beautifully.

She sings this in the Maori language too. It's on her Pure album. I've never heard her sing it in English though. What a treat!

How was her voice? You didn't know her then so you were biased so I'm kinda curious as to what you thought. Or had you already heard of her?

Great work HWI! As ethereal as ever.. especially her pre-Pure days! That bell like quality isn't really there now anymore. But I like how she's expanding into various styles of music. So it's a worthwhile bargain I guess.

The melody to pokarekare ana is so beautiful. Even with these lyrics, it's very touching. Thanks for posting it after all these years.
