Thin Lizzy played "Sweetheart" during their '79 Japanese Tour. This is quite interesting, as the track itself wouldn't come out until Chinatown was released until late Spring of 1980. Phil uses a few different lines in this version of the song, but it is quite evident that the music had been written for quite sometime prior to Chinatown's release.

It is also interesting to note that this recording features guitarist Dave Flett, who was the hired gun for the tour while Thin Lizzy looked for a suitable replacement for Gary Moore. Midge Ure was also still with the band during this time, playing mainly keyboards.

Enjoy!

Chinatown is a great album every song is a winner for me. Sweetheart is probably my favourite song on the album. The solo actually brings me to tears everytime I hear it.

I think Midge played keyboards here. Dave Flett was the other guitarist. It would have been interesting to watch this line up playing.

I love how Phil sings different lyrics to this song in almost every version.

I think it's because it followed arguably their best studio album Black Rose (with Gary Moore) & Live & Dangerous just prior to that...tough acts to follow, especially replacing the flammable Moore with the laid back-ness of Snowy White who had been touring with Pink Floyd...

Hey, I liked "Didn't I," too! The only track on "Chinatown" I didn't really care for, ironically, was the first single, "Killer on the Loose." And the production was a bit off (solid-state amps in a mix that was a bit too "dry"). But other than that it was a fine album.

Great song from a great album! I never understood all the negativity 'Chinatown' got - other than 'Didn't I?' the songs are all top notch.
