Track 7 from Renegade (1981)

Lyrics:

Check out Fats, he's a real cool cat

He's got a black and white tux with lots of class

He says, I love that jazz. I love that razz-ma-tazz. I love to swing.

I just go crazy when you give me room to do my thing. That's Fats

Well, check out Fats, he's a real cool cat

He's got bright white spats and sharp dark trilby hat

He's got a chick that's slick and I like her looks

And I like the way her lipstick, it matches the carnation on his tux

I love his jazz, I love his style, it makes me feel so nice

Oh Fats, won't you play for ma a while? That's Fats

Oh well, Sigmund Freud, he gets very annoyed

He was checking out Fats and Waller just don't like that cat

He said, I don't like his looks, I don't like his fashion.

I love his jazz, I love his style, it makes me feel so nice

Oh Fats, won't you play for me a while? Not that Fats

He's such a real cool cat, that's Fats. Nobody plays that jazz, not like Fats

I really don't understand why some commentators keep on praising the quality of the TL lyrics, even refering to the typical Irish storytellers capacity and so on. Sorry, but quite a number of Irish aren't at all excellent storytellers, the Irish mob to name but them. That's oh so cliché and as silly as claiming that all Italians are good opera singers. And frankly, although I really love the instrumental qualities of TL, the songs really loose quite a lot of their potential strength, because of quite odd non sense-ish lyrics that seemed to have been written down hastily after two beers to many on a sous bock, no idea how you call that cardboard piece under your glass in English. Come on, people, wake up:Sygmund FreudGot really annoyed...Lipstiick matching a carnation ???? What the heck ???Sorry, that is OK for a kid of 10 years old, that is lightyears away of whatever the Oscar Wilde of the R'n'R is supposed to be... Mexican girl is another completely silly text, I really don't understand all those people that get extactic about it, as if they want to kiss Phil's feet if they still could. They say in Dutch that a child's hand is quickly filled. I have the impression those of many rock fans are filled even quicker. Thin Lizzy scores very high when it comes to the instrumental parts, the excellent drumming, the two guiters, the nice and efficient bass, I'm quite fond of Lynnott's vocals, and the band certainly has excellent songs like Angel of Death, Sun goes Down, Holy War... But please please, remain at least a bit intellectually honest, and don't call their lyrics great, unless you want to be elected as the silly oildrum of the year.... Allthough he was in fact overdoing it a bit too much, I think someone like Fish would qualify more as someone able to write lyrics as PL. And don't give me that "no bad words about the dead" stuff, I'm not supersticious nor claiming to have whatsoever savoir vivre. But what I do is remaining honest, in whatever circumstances. I'd like to see someone beating me at it.
