Lyrics & Information

This is one of the most fantastic live studio sessions of this song I think I've ever heard. Thin Lizzy made around 43 individual recordings, featuring 41 different songs, with two tracks recorded twice, for the Stuart Henry radio programme and then released via the BBC. I will be putting up more tracks from these sessions in due time. But for now rock out with this explosive rendition of Black Boys on the Corner!

Lyrics :-

Hey man what you doin?

I think I'll go on down the corner

One of the black boys said

I need none of your pity!

It's your mama that don't

Like you loose in the city

But stick about, take note

Take a tip, and take no back lip

Come a closer

Let me see you snap your fingertip

Because standing on the corner

It might suit you

Or maybe baby

Theres something else you wanna do yeah

Like rolling dice, nice!

Like shooting pool, hey thats cool

Black boy

And I don't know my proper place

I'm a little

Black boy

And I just got to play my bass

I'm a little

Black boy

And I don't recognise a face

I'm a little

Black boy

Ain't no much fun ain't no disgrace

I'm a little

[Solo and drumming]

One of the black boys said

Im a giving a warning

People been putting me down

Im so tired Im yawning

A new suit, pretty boots to boot

Im feeling slick

Gonna go to town, look around

Pull a chick

'Course standing on the corner

Might suit ya

Or maybe baby there's something else

That ya wanna do yeah

I like a playing poker

Joker

I like to back a race

Ace!

Black boy

And I don't know my proper place

I'm a little

Black boy

And I just got to play my bass

I'm a little

Black boy

And I just throw my spaded ace

I'm a little

Black boy

Won't you recognise the face

I'm a little

[Outro Solo]

Althought Nightlife is my favorite Lizzy Album...for me there are just some older Eric Bell Lizzy tracks that Gorham and Robertson could never come close to performing such as 'The Rocker' and 'Black boys on the corner'...as Eric Bell simply was Eric Bell - basically was Irelands answer to Hendrix and only Eric Bell can do Eric Bell but in saying that 'Nightlife' is my favorite all time album of any band and I feel it was one or two storming tracks away from being a world wide sensation so I have a deep love for Robbo and Gorhams style.....Can you imagine for example if the track 'Frankie Carroll' on nightlife instead had 'Johnny the fox' in it's place......then Nightlife would have been one of the best selling albums of all time

This is raw lizzy before they went mainstream so to speak....I liked the band as soon as I first heard this track on the Peel show "or was it on the tommy Vance radio slot" way back in 74..... Is it too late to get the track in this untouched Vance format out there? cos it still sounds great even after all these years.....

I've been looking for this version of this song for over 35 years!!! Saw Lizzy play with Gary Moore in very early '74 at Bracknell stadium (a fantastic gig, one of the very best I've ever seen) and this is the version they played. Heard it briefly on the radio shortly after (must have been this session) but I haven't heard it since. Thanks a million for posting it!

4th april is Gary's birthday too ! Great version. He had only had Green's les paul a few months here.

thats what im doing! just enjoying all the stuff you uploaded. Dont be shy and keep up all the good work. there's always people who will feel defensive about things they may not be too sure about. Personally I think they will end up missing out an awful lot!. the stuff you are posting is pure joy. BTW, some of the Peel sessions (J. the Fox, Bad Rep) they sound like karaoke-d to a backing track dont they? probably they hated loud amps (in order to get the crunch) in radio studios. :(

Exactly. I've had quite a few people say they love or hate this. But in my opinion 2 versions of the same song is always a bonus. I like to upload a lot of their early stuff. So feel free to have a look round my channel. Thanks again friend!

no objections to Moore at all. Just enjoying myself a lot. I like both and its actually amazing to see how quickly Gary made the songs 'his' . Cheers cheers cheers. this is really cool

Hey bud thanks for all your comments! Yeah the exact date is the 4th April 1974. Eric Bell had left on New Year's eve 1973. So it's great to hear Moore doing these songs, he manages to keep the same vein of the song but spices it up a little. I've no doubt Bell would have been the best for these studio sessions but thats only my opinion cos he did the original song. Glad you're enjoying the stuff!
