Quadrophenia was released in October of 1973...punk was a derogatory term common among middle aged and elder citizens used to describe rebellious teenagers and/or twenty-somethings during the 50's and 60's. The kids in Quadrophenia belonged to a subculture called The Mods. They were pretty much the forerunners of the punks that came into mainstream consciousness in the mid to late 70's.If you listen to one of the soundbites in between songs, there is a newscast in which the commentator describes an altercation between mods and 'leather clad rockers'...those clashes were real...go to Wikipedia and search "Quadrophenia"...there is a very good overview of the album and the themes conveyed by the songs.
