I don't think the lineup really affects the sound of their music - as far as determining whether it's good or 'bad'. People were bitching when Adore came out. It has nothing to do with new members. Nobody wants to accept change.

They come to Pohoda festival in Slovakia :))

I think you are right and all the stigma attached to SP is due to personal reminiscing of the old times. I guess its time to embrace the new SP and adapt to change. Though I still think this music should be under a new name :)

Evi7Bass, I thought that for along time and I think it was bc of their great stage presence. James, Darcy, and Jimmy credit started one of the greatest bands ever with him but after Gish it really seems like it was all Billy. He didn't need them for song writing and then their drug use threw a wrench in everything and I think all the change/criticism screwed with him. Now he is back on track with a band that he likes to work with more than the original. I think SP has a bright future now.

If you want "character and depth" give Oceania a good couple of listens.

For me this recent material really shows that The Smashing Pumpkins wasnt just Billy Corgan back in the day. Dont all forget The Smashing Pumpkins were a "band" and not a solo project... and without the original members the character and depth of the songs achieved back in the 90's has been lost.

As for hard rock, you should check out 'Quasar'. It's pretty good. 'Song for a Son' has a really good solo, too. Billy's classic rock side kind of comes out.

This song is pretty good actually. As for becoming soft alternative, you and I both know that's not true. They've always mixed in soft songs (Daydream, Disarm, 33, Tonight Tonight, 1979, Sweet Sweet, etc etc etc). Oceania has a nice mix of hard and soft, too. Should be really impressive.

@asdfqwervd Since when did making hits become the measure of a great musical artist. He's still making good, sincere music. That's what he did in the nineties, and that what he's done ever since.

@asdfqwervd Yeah. You're right. I'm pretty sure Billy Corgan forgot all about making original music after the year 1999. Come on. Whether or not you like the style of the new material, you shouldn't knock the greatest songwriter of Generation X for continuing to make original music. P.S. Zwan was a killer band.

The Pumpkins have changed all the time, their style has changed all the time and the reactions of their fans have always been the same. Ten years from now people will really appreciate this music. Rock on Pumpkins!

this track has moments of genius but the remaining 80% of it is just amateur drivel RIP SP

This has more of a classic SP feel -- great guitars, that awesome lead at the 1:28 mark. I think a lot of people are distracted by the simple drumming style here ... not sure Jimmy would even want to play on a song like this. The "Here comes the mourning man" bit is a little stupid but it's the only bad lyric you really dwell on. Compared to the rest of the Teargarden crap this is gold.

@minedarea Yeah, Lightning Strikes started out with me not sure about it but really, really grew on me... but this one started out strong AND grew on me. It's just a lovely headswim of music. Gets me emotionally.

I don't mind this song. I can definitely see me getting it stuck in my head. It almost sounds a little like something a pop-punk band would so though. Something about the power chords. I don't know if anyone gets what I mean.
