The Rose of Allendale" is an English song, with words by Charles Jefferys and music by Sidney Nelson, composed in the 1840s. Because the song has been recorded by Paddy Reilly and Mary Black, many people mistakenly believe the song to be a (traditional) Irish song. Sometimes it is also believed to be a Scottish song.wikipedia

Brilliant music from Mary............thank you Machree. Would love to see a video version of same by Mary if anyone has it. Great photo too, showing the original back gate of Guinness St James's Gate Brewery (no 2 gate) leading to Robert St, Rainsford St and Portland St West. Guinness purchased these local streets from Dublin City Council in the late 70s to include same within the brewery complex and moved the brewery no 2 gate out to Market St South and Bellevue, location of the current Storehouse, Guinness visitors' centre. .Beir bua.

Any one know of the version by the Ripley Wayfarers?

it was originally a German folk song and some how made its way to the Uk in about 1840, it is probable that British soldiers brought the tune from wars they fought in Germany. Ie, the Battle of Blenheim.

sorry, we do have an Avondale (in the Pale methinks), but I have a sneaking suspicion that it was named by the English...

Not sure the Irish "claim" it, they just sing it best lol. We know we don't have "dales" whatsoever ;)

@machree01 I just realised that I've been following Mary Black since medical school c. 1983. I guess we've grown up together. Thank you so much for posting these sweet memories! She recorded one song I can't find, something like "you will be loved." Help finding that appreciated.
